  1. Hi there.

I've been searching a long time for this answer but it never came...

Alright, let's get strated : I have an *original* DVD (Layer Cake)

I would like to extract the French audio track from it and encode it in AC3 (for example)

And I'm completely lost. When I rip the DVD, I end up with tons of files, I don't know what to do with them !

Some files are in french, some in english,...

Does anyone have a basic *detailed* tutorial on how to do this ?

Any reply is more than appreciated.

Did you actually google for the answer?..Cus frankly, I'm surprised that it "never came"..
This one method still works great today..And there are other ways to get it done..

Use DVDD for the ripping and if needed use an audio editing/converting app for AC3-->wav for instance..Audacity works a treat!

  3. well, I tried several methods but this DVD has an agressive protection... I get a lot of read error.

I once was able to rip it with anyDVD.

I gonna try your link, thanks a lot !

Yeah! for newer DVD's/flicks you'll need an updated ripper, the mentioned AnyDVD or DVDFab..Once ripped you can extract the audio stream(s) with PGCdemux, DGIndex etc..

  5. Actually, with those softwares (PGCdemux & DGIndex), you can't choose the audio bitrate (unless I haven't found the setting)

I suceed extracting my audio track with both those soft but the bitrate is 448kbps.

I'm already very happy I did that...

    Thanks a million

PS : After rippinf my DVD with DVDfab, I ended up with 8 files, why ? is it because of the chapters ? I never understood the structure of a DVD... (see the pics attached)

  6. forgot to push the "upload" button...

EDIT : and if I'm not mistaken, my extracted AC3 files are only 2 channel instead of 6...

The video, audio and subtitles are int he VOB files, the details about aspect ratio, track numbers, chapters etc are int he IFO files. The BUP files are backups of the IFO files. This is what a DVD looks like.

If you have just demuxed the audio, then it will be whatever was in the original. Demuxing on it's own does no conversion.

  8. That's odd, on my picture, i can read "French | AC-3/5.1" I wonder why it extracted only 2 channels...

I don't believe DVDFab actually looks at the audio tracks, but gets the channels form the IFO file. If they are mis-labelled (not unheard of) then it will show you the wrong details.

What method did you use to demux the audio ?
How are you assessing the number of channels ?
What does mediainfo say about the AC3 file ?

  10. Well, on the original box, it's writtien "french, spanish, english, Dolby Digital 5.1"...

Actually, mediainfo says it's 6ch... no problem then !

    thanks a lot !
