I'm trying to get around facebook's thing where you can post a video in a multitude of formats, but you can't post an audio file like mp3.

I want to see if I can create a "video" file in one of facebook's accepted formats (e.g. AVI, MP4) that actually doesn't contain any video, just the audio. Then I could post that to facebook, since it would appear as just a normal video.

Can I do that with ffmpegX, i.e. convert an mp3 audio file to a video file that actually contains only audio? Looks like there should be a way, but I can't figure it out.

Also, if the video must contain something, can I put in some still image?

No you couldn't; no it wouldn't, since there's no video.

That's the obvious way to do it. YouTube is full of songs accompanied only by a picture. I don't use Facebook but assume it's the same there.

Yes! That's what I want -- a "video" where the video track is just a still image, or even blackness. I should be able to post that to facebook as a video, even though really it's just audio.

So I need a program that will generate a specified length of video file, whether it be blank or a still image, to which I just add the song I want to post. Hm, I think iPhoto will export a video version of a slide show -- that might be the ticket.

  4. Import a single black image, set the bitrate to 1/s where s is the number of seconds you want the final file. Audio -> Audio From Another File. Save as AVI.

Thanks, Jagabo, but I'm on a Mac (Mac OS X 10.6.5) and VirtualDub is Windows-only.

I think I can do what I want with iPhoto.... Will post Mac-based solution if I do.

No, once it's encoded (as XviD, H.264, whatever) it becomes video. The fact that it's static is immaterial.
