  1. Hey guys, new to this forum but I have been visiting trying to figure this out...
I have Verizon FIOS HDTV. My box has composite output/coaxil output/HDMi output.

I cannot get HD signal except on the HDMI output. I have tried both the composite and the coax connections, and while the HD channles appear, they are not in HD quality like when I use the HDMI connection to the box.

I am looking to start using a capture card this season instead of paying for DVR, and they all look like coax connections are required? So I cannot figure out how I can capture HDTV with an HDTuner

    Noob here!

You are getting exactly what they want you to get. SD only. Consider yourself fortunate if 16:9 SD is offered.

At least with cable you can cap HD on IEEE-1394 for the channels they want you to get. If they stop that I'm cancelling my $100plus per month subscription..

  3. Yes, Hollywood has been working very hard, on both the technological and legal fronts, to prevent you from doing what you want.

To capture high def you would need to remove HDCP encryption from the HDMI output. This can be done with a HDFury2 (HDMI to HD component video) and a HD component capture device like the Hauppauge HD PVR, or with Mux-HD (HDCP stripper) and a HDMI capture device like the BlackMagic Intensity.

The DMCA made such devices illegal in the USA. But recent court decisions appear to have made them legal (you are allowed to bypass the encryption for at least some "fair use" purposes).

Oh, and a word of warning: the manufacturer of the HDCP bypass devices has admitted to using keys stolen from popular HDTVs. HDCP rules include a mechanism for revoking keys. Although it's unlikely (there would be many unhappy HDTV owners), it's possible that the keys used in these devices could be revoked at any time making them useless.

  4. Hmm... All Fios HD Set Top Boxes support HD-Output over Component Video as well as HDMI (Click Here for More Info).

The Hauppauge HD-PVR can record stuff in HD with it's Component Video Inputs. [Link]
    It records to h.264
It supports analog stereo, and Dolby Digital AC3 5.1 (Optical & Coaxial).

    It supports 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i.
I'm not sure if Fios has any 1080p channels.
If so, you need to limit the output on your cable box to 1080i max.

  5. The HD boxes on Fios are limited to 1080i output, even with HDMI...so 1080p isn't even an issue, and they do support HD output over the good ol' analog component connections.

The coax output is NTSC...so no HD there...and composite and S-Video connections don't support HD signals.

That didn't sound right to me so I checked my hd-pvr. It only has fiber optic input for digital sound. It does not support coaxial digital input.

Though there may be a newer model than mine. So far as I know I have the 1212 model. I've had it for at least a year maybe more. If there is a new hd-pvr that supports coaxial I apologize. But at least on the earlier models there is only fiber optic input for digital sound.
