    Wow...
I have read for awhile, I guess everything I don't need...
I have XP pro, 3 gigs memory, dvd milti recorder.

    1) Do I have to install some hardware to copy a dvd to the hard drive and edit?

    2) I have downloaded virtualdub but can't get seem to do this, is there some detailed info somewhere, or where do I start?

    Thanks

What your intentions are as far as editing. Since all you need is a dvd player in your pc and copying software to copy it. Converting it is secondary

If it is a commercial disc, then yes. DVDFab HD Decrypter is free and will rip the DVD to your HDD. If it is a home made disc then you can just copy the files to your HDD.

Virtualdub comes as a zip file. You will have to unzip the content to your HDD first, then run the Virtualdub program.

What are you planning to do with your video ? Virtualdub may not be the most appropriate choice in all circumstances

I am trying to clean up/filter some noise out and maybe enhance the detail and clearity.

I unzipped virtualdub...it say's the movie files on the home made dvd are not compatible, yet it plays on windows media player.

I tried windows movie maker...it also won't do anything as the file type is not compatible.

I down loaded Easydivx and it does see the files and when you go through the steps the last is saving it to the hard drive and it says the folder I created has a un-natural space...what ever that means, hope this explains better.

    Thanks

If you explore your dvd what files does windows show are in it? If the VIDEO_TS folder is there can you drag it onto your desktop?
You can try ripping your DVD to an iso file, or see if you can import it straight to fairusewizard.

I would use VOB2MPG to get the video and audio into an mpg container, then load it into the latest version of virtualdub and take it from there.

DVD movies, at their core, are MPEG2-based. The barebones verison of VirtualDub is an AVI editor. You will likely need an MPEG-2 plugin or VirtualDubMod or VirtualDub MPEG-2. However, it will output your movie to an AVI format, which you will thereafter need to convert back to MPEG-2 for DVD authoring.

1: DVDFab HD Decrypter (disc to hd) ... whether its encrypted or not

2: Mpg2Cut2 (strip mpeg from vob) or dvdshrink (reauthor mode)

3: Avidemux (edit, filters, conversion) ... unless more advanced authoring software would be useful ... you say edit but not how ?

I downloaded DVD Decrypter as you suggested above, do I need that and this software also?

I was going to try and use virtualdub and remove some noise and maybe sharpen/give it a little more detail..."clean it up"
Do you think Avidemux is as good or better?

Is Avidemux as good for cleaning up the video/audio as virtualdub?
You don't see it mentioned as often. And is Avidemux or virtualdub more "user friendly"?
