so I have my only computer, an HP Pavillion Notebook with 2.0GHz dual core processor, 4 gigs of RAM, and a pretty fat HDD.

when I put my SDHC card (Transcend class 6 16GB) into my computer to work with the files (in my also newly purchased Sony Vegas 10 platinum suite) my computer seems unable to play the files, it's super herky-jerky visually, though the audio plays smoothly in the background. I am uploading sample footage to my photobucket and vimeo accounts right now. Playback is also really bad in VLC but I read here that it sucks at .MTS anyway

anyway, what I really need to do is edit some HD video. can I use vegas to simply open and save as to change to a smaller more manageable file type?

also: my laptop has had overheating issues ever since it was purchased (sept '08 or so) and at this point it says the battery should be replaced for optimal performance every time I boot it up. Even though it's always plugged into the wall is this still dragging my computer down?

I was so excited to start putting together some solid footage but now it looks like I'm gonna have to record in whatever the lowest res setting on my camcorder is.

I read elsewhere on the forum that I can use the software that came with my camcorder to import the video file as something else which could be more manageable.

while I would LIKE to put out the best possible quality videos what's more important is me being able to edit the video properly, not necessarily having the highest of high resolutions.

I think that covers all my thoughts and questions.

bump number 2: making a .avi file with vegas turns out the same horrible image. all full of herky-jerky lines and whatnot.

To play m2ts file it worked fine for me the Splash litle player (freeware): Cnet download link

To convert m2ts files to mpeg (they work fine with VLC or other programs), you can use the freeware conversos Hamster: Cnet download

You can convert the video file to MPEG (fine for VLC or other progrmas) or to ipod, iphone, blackberry and other formats

It was a surprise to me, that you can upload m2ts video files to youtube without any problem.

the battery won't degrade performance, but they still die even if plugged in all the time. you should set the performance to max if you use ac all the time so it won't slow down.

try copying the file to the hard drive before working on it. speed working off the card may be slowing you down and not allowing smooth playback.
