    Sorry, I should have also stated that I would prefer not to have seperate streams resulting in files for both the audio and video if at all possible but to keep it as it is.

    What are the particulars of the mpeg ?
    Usually the AVI would be created non-interlaced. How the mpeg is treated depends on the content, framerate
    and whether it is interlaced, progressive, or a hybrid.

    So you want top quality and minimum fuss, as Jagabo pointed AutoGK will do that. Just set Target Quality to 80%, but don't be surprised if you end up with large files. You can also look at Handbrake, I don't use it so I can't tell you about the quality.
