I have discovered that the Sony TRV 840 camcorder has "pass through" to convert analog to digital. I am thinking of buying a used TRV 840 but I have questions about how it works, what cords are necessary, etc. I would appreciate someone who is familiar with that camcorder, or one, even Canon, that has "pass through" to contact me so that I can ask some newby questions. Please send me a message on here or contact me through my email, tadd5181@yahoo.com. Thanks

the cam will have a firewire out that goes to your computer's firewire in
if your computer doesn't have a firewire in, you'll have to buy a little card that does and insert itLast edited by zoobie; 24th Apr 2010 at 11:32.

If anyone is following this thread and the multitude of questions/problems I had with making copies of Hi8 tapes, here is how I finally was able to do so.
I borrowed a HI8 camcorder, Sony TR 940 (it did not have "pass through technology), and I had a Sony PC 100 (mini DV) camcorder. After myriad of trials, I finally was able to hook the two together using an AV cable for the sound and an S video cable for the video. Having both on "play", I copied the analog Hi8 material digitially onto the PC 100. The latter has an odd quirk: you must push two buttons simultaneously to get the recording on the PC 100 started...something which is described in the PC 100's manual, but is not obvious.
I checked and the digital material is captured in iMovie of my iMac, but I am assuming it would also be just as easily captured in Adobe Premier Elements or any other video Windows based editing program.
I am informed via (Pogue's text, "iMovie 09 and iDVD", pages 44-47) that there is virtually no picture degradation. The same text at the same place describes other methods of copying Hi9 tapes digitially. -
Yes all similar for "pass through".
iMovie needs to be set in projects to pass through device.
Others (Windows) need the device control turned off.
I can provide some details.
PS: I should have said I have provided details.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.
