I recieve this message when I try to open a .mkv file on virtualdub

I suppose I need a codec, since I've recently analyzed my computer and found 500 viruses!
So probably an important file has been erased.

    Is this right?
where can I find the codec/s I need?

What I want to do is to merge 2 .mkv files so that I can then convert it to DVD with Convertxtodvd.

    Thanks a lot

  3. VirtualDub doesn't open MKV files. Are you using VirtualDubMod or AVISynth?

Use MediaInfo to determine what codecs are used in the MKV file.

The 'decompressor for format "yyyy"' message (yes, I know that's not the exact same text ) usually means the MKV is using AVC video. I recall celtic_druid saying a while back that there was basically no good way (or any way at all? My memory's not perfect...) to handle that type of video using VfW, so therefore, it can't be done in VirtualDub(Mod).

I still haven't done much with mkvmerge, as jagabo knows, ( ) but I wonder if it would allow you to join two MKVs. The two MKVs would likely have to be encoded very much the same, though.

Sorry, I still can't undertand what I have to do:
I install Media Info.. and this is what it tells:

    General #0
    Nombre completo : G:\c\CD1\lala-cd1.mkv
    Formato : Matroska
Tamaño del archivo : 698 MiB
    Duración : 45min.
    Bitrate : 2147 Kbps
    Encoded date : UTC 2007-04-27 09:04:47
    aplicación : mkvmerge v2.0.2 ('You're My Flame') built on Feb 21 2007 23:40:55
    Software : libebml v0.7.7 + libmatroska v0.8.1

    Video #0
    Codec : MPEG-4 AVC
    Codec/Info : MPEG4 ISO advanced profile
    Duración : 45min.
    Ancho : 704 píxeles
    Alto : 576 píxeles
    Relación de aspecto : 4/3
Promedio de cuadros : 25.000 fps

    Audio #0
    Codec : MPEG1/2 L2
    Codec/Info : MPEG1 or 2 Audio layer 2
    Canales : 2 canales
promedio de muestreo : 48 KHz

In the Basic view I clicked in the button under Video and took me to download FDshow codecs. So, should I install that pack?
I realized I have FDshow installed, since it is in a folder of the codepack installed on my pc, Codepack Elisoft

By the way, I've tried converting this mkv in WinAvi videoconverter with the append segment and the result was a video without sound and image!
I can play it with VLC. And also can convert it with Total Video Converter.

If I want to convert the video into AVI with TVC, what bitrates, framerate, etc should I use or ytou recommend?

    Thanks a lot!

  7. You can use MKVMerge GUI to merge two MKV files together. Use the Add button at the top right to add both files. Change the output filename near the bottom then press Start Muxing. I don't know how closely the two files have to match though.

If you still want to use VirtaulDub to convert to AVI: if you have ffdshow installed try enabling h.264 decoding in the VFW section.

Start -> All Programs -> ffdshow -> VFW codec configuration. Go to the Decoder tab, select Codecs (in the left window), find h.264 in the right window and enable libavcodec.

That might allow you to open the MKV file with VirtualDubMod. But that usually doesn't work these days because VirtualDubMod's MKV handling is very out of date.

VDubMod's mkv support is simply out of date, a is VfW. They simply can't handle native AVC. In order for ffdshow to work the mkv would have to contain AVC stored in VfW compatibility mode.

Basically forget about using VDubMod to work with mkv's.

AVIDemux is probably the closest to VD that can handle MKVs.

The best you would be able to find is an AVISynth script, that frameserves an MKV into VirtualDub. As celtic_druid mentions above, there just isn't a way to do this directly using the Video for Windows (VfW) interface, nor is there likely to be a way in the future.

I know this thread has been dead for a while but here is some help using any type of x264/h264 video with VirtualDubMod. You still can't append segments but you can easily edit them as long as you have ffdshow or CoreAVC installed along with Haali's Splitter and of course AVISynth.
