Yeah i was gonna say, it seem's kind of weird that they would make something that does this for free after they stopped updating the free version of dvdfab decrypter until after a month after they updated the pay version....

    But then i saw,
DVDFab Passkey is a Windows-based driver that works on-the-fly to unprotect encrypted movie DVDs and Blu-ray discs. All features are free during BETA stage.
We want everyone to help us test it for free than we will charge you for it!!
    LOL!!

The other thread was closed so... I wouldn't say the subject has been covered here (or there) yet, only mentioned briefly. I wasn't interested at first but believe it's worth a download and tryout. Time (and results) will tell.

I tried Passkey on a protected 2006 DVD movie that ordinary rippers can't rip. It requires DVDFab to rip it. Unfortunately Passkey didn't work.

After inserting the disk with Passkey active, it went thru a process then said the movie was ready. However RipIt4Me showed the movie as still protected, and attempting to open it with DVDShrink gave an immediate error message.

I looked for some detailed specific instructions for Passkey and couldn't find any.

So they've got quite a ways to go yet...

Well I've tried the program on a number of my Blu-Ray movies and it seems to work just as well as AnyDVD (besides having an interface that is almost a complete ripoff of AnyDVD lol). Haven't tried it with regular DVD's yet however. Also I like the free during beta aspect.

If you use PassKey with DVDShrink you need to disable PathPlayer in the settings of PassKey. I have been trying it on the latest movie releases region 1 with 1Click, DVDNextCopy, DVDRanger, CloneDVD2, Recode and it is working nicely. The about info says it is free until May 2010 so it will be interesting to see what the cost of it will be when it goes Prime Time.

  8. Will the free beta version suddenly stop working when they start to charge for the software?

I'd imagine it would, or the betas would be set to expire at a certain point (and they might not 'renew' it shortly before the full version is released. After all, aside from those who want to keep up-to-date with the latest protections and such, why would people buy the full product if they could just use one of the earlier, free beta versions?
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

The beta will expire in May 2010 so it will not update after that.

PassKey is just another driver decrypter like AnyDVD that will allow you to use pretty much any backup program where the full version of FAB will offer all the other tools. So, if you will only use FAB Platinum then you wont need Passkey however if you prefer other programs then you will need a separate decrypter and I believe that's what the author of FAB is trying to go after in this market.
