    im getting this error on Vdub 1.9.8 when trying to edit a wmv file. the screen is black and it says Missing codec. i also tried using vdub mpeg2 and got the error couldnt locate decompressor for format WMV3. I installed the ASF codec mentions in one of the tutorials but its still not working.

    btw is there another good .wmv editor besides asfbin?

    You need:

    a) the WMV9 VCM ;

    b) set ffdshow to decode VC-1 in the VfW mode ;

    For demuxing, cutting and joining ASF files,
    AsfBin still is the best choice IMHO.

    now when i try to save it, how do i make it wmv instead of save as avi?

    the only thing i dont like about asfbin is setting the start/end manually because if it does not cut on the right keyframe, i have to do it all over again and it take a lot of time if its a big file

  4. You can't export wmv in vdub. You can export wmv in avi container if you have wmv9 vcm installed (wmv9vcm.dll)

    In asfbin, in the advanced options, did you try the re-encode keyframes option? The good thing about asfbin is that it doesn't re-encode for the most part if you have cuts editing only (same quality)

    Another option is to do all your editing in avisynth, but then you have to re-encode (e.g. using wmnicenc), but at least your edits are perfect

    For editing WMV/ASF you need ffdshow set to WMV9 for WMV1,2 and 3 and libavcodec for VC-1. Also install the DivX 3.11 codec since Virtualdub sees WMV1 audio as DivX audio.

    WMV9 VCM is for compressing WMV into an AVI container.

    If you want to edit WMV files without recoding and keeping them in in the WMV container then use Windows Media File Editor. It's a PITA to try and cut exactly where you want but in my opinion, it's the best and easiest program to use. For joining ASF/WMV files, I use ASFJoin. I beleive you have to put a copy of asfbin.exe in the ASFJoin folder.

    Actually, the WMV9 Video Compression Manager also decodes WMV3 in AVI.
    And ffdshow can be set to use the VC-1 DMO decoder instead of libavcodec.
    And no, DivX 3.11 is not needed at all --- one can install just the DivX Audio codec.

    If you simply want to do cut and join wmv clips, I wonder whether MOVICA might help.

    I've never changed any settings on ffdshow so I don't know where the WMV9 and VC-1 DMO is located in the settings. Can anyone help me? Thanks

  9. ffdshow vfw configuration (gold icon) , set the wmv1/7 , 2/8 , 3/9 ,vc-1 to libavcodec or wmv9 instead of disabled

    This only allows you to decode, not encode to wmv

    Not sure why you thought you needed to attack my post. I thought my advice was right on. Works perfect for me.

    You can decompress WMV in AVI with the WMV plugin and ffdshow. You don't need the WMV9_VCM to do that.

    I don't have a VC-1 DMO decoder in ffdshow so libavcodec works just fine for me. Seems like I used to just be able to use WMV9 to decompress VC-1 but somewhere along the line that changed. You did not tell the OP how to set ffdshow in the first place.

    Yeah, you can just install the DivX audio codec now, you don't have to install the whole DivX 3.11 codec. Can you decompress DivX 3 with a newer DivX codec though (DivX 3.11 is not mpeg 4)? I've been installing the DivX 3.11 codec for years now for some reason.
