I just bought a dual layer DVD burner. I have some high quality mpv videos that are around 5 gigs. I would like burn these videos to DVD9 disks & rrtain the HD quality. I know there are a lot of guides on here, which one is best for me? I would like to use tmpgenc for burning it. Any advice is appreciated

ONLY use Verbatim DVD+R DL discs for your burning. If you have bought anything else, you have wasted your money. And ImgBurn (free) is really best for DL burning. People who don't use ImgBurn and don't use Verbatim post here all the time crying about making coasters. It's your choice.

Well, obviously burning the videos as is would lead to the greatest quality, but I assume you are talking about conversion to DVD format. They'll have to be re-encoded and probably downsized, both of which may lead to somewhat reduced quality even under the best of circumstances. ConvertXtoDVD isn't free, but it's pretty easy to use and many are happy with it. Here's one guide.

thanks. i know that there may be some downgraded video to get the HD video on a DVD9 i'm sure curious of what i should use to convert it or things to consider.
in the past some of the mkv videos i had were like 3 gigs and i loaded one into TMPGENC DVD to see if i could burn it to a 4.7 gig DVD. and The size in TMPGENC said it was like 8 gigs, which i guess means it calculated the projected size of the project after it would be converted.

I have not had the time to try it yet though. Does TMPGENC do a good job of converting HD video files to VOB/DVD compliant formats? Any tutorials or advice I appreciate very much.

You can always use a lower bit rate to fit more video on a disc. TMPGenc probably has some default settings that ended up suggesting the large final output size even though it was possible to produce something that would fit on a single layer DVD.

TMPGenc is OK. On the plus side it's pretty easy for inexperienced users to use and it generates good quality output. On the minus side, TMPGenc often ignores maximum bit rate instructions and may generate a slightly larger file than you really want. I've also noticed that it may produce an unusually large number of macroblocks at scene changes.

HCenc is free and can produce better output than TMPGenc, but it's not as easy for novices to use. The GUI version has an option to produce DVD compliant output, but I've never used it and don't know how well it works. If it doesn't work correctly you'll have to learn AviSynth scripting to feed your video correctly downsized into HCenc.

You can also try AVStoDVD, which is an all in one program that can convert to dvd video using the HC encoder.

Make sure to set output to DVD9, since default is DVD5.

  6. Please note that what i'm telling you requires a blu-ray player that supports playing back avchd video. Considering that you're asking to play back hd video i'm sure you already have the appropriate setup.

I can't believe nobody hasn't mention this yet. I've been doing this for over a year so far. Get TSMuxer and drop that MKV into it and select avchd and your output folder. It'll take a min to two to change the container. Then burn the BDMV and Certificate folder onto the dvd using imgburn. It'll take you about 15 mins to do all of this plus it doesn't change the video at all. Your files will increase slightly with this but not much.

    Here's a basic guide:

Please note that in the step where it says to select blu-ray format you want to instead select avchd. This is an older guide but the steps are the same.

If you JUST had said directly that you had a blu-ray player we all had said tsmuxer and multiavchd directly. .
