  1. I don't do this often but I thought I would rip a DVD to watch on the road (in this case it was Firewall R1).

Loaded up the DVD and also AnyDVD to get over CSS encryption. Fired up autoGK and pointed to the DVD ifo file. It found the ifo for the main title and after setting some basic options fired off the program. After about 5 hours I got an avi file in xvid format that had audio out of sync. My goal was to try to rip the DVD without having to copy G's of data to my HD.

Anyway bit the bullet and used DVDShrink to re-author the DVD and include only the main title and copy that to my HD (as only one large vob file) with no compression. Of course DVDShrink complained that the resulting output would not be readable by a DVD player but ignored that.

Then fired up autoGK again and pointed to the ifo file on the HD which had been created by DVDShrink. Again after the 5 hours or so, this time the avi file is fine.

So I know what to do in the future but I wonder, is it possible to rip the title directly without having to either run DVDDecrypter or DVDShrink first? I suspect possible the out of sync is due to some of the menu video getting into the video stream but can't be sure.

    Thanks

Use ripit4me to rip instead of anyDVD. You don't have to update it as frequently, and it uses fixVTS as part of it'sprocess so all should be well at the end of the rip.

  3. Actually I am not having a problem with the ripping. I had hoped to avoid ripping - just encode the DVD directly so had to use AnyDVD to get over CSS encryption since AutoGK can't read a DVD otherwise.

In the end had to use DVDShrink to copy the main movie track to my HD and then use AutoGK on that which produces an in sync movie

The problem isn't CSS. Even Shrink can beat CSS in most cases without the need for AnyDVD. The problem is Sony's ArCoSS structure protection, which AnyDVD can beat, but it needs to be constantly updated to do so. RipIt4Me avoids the need to constantly update AnyDVD by working out the protection on-the-fly, and beating it with DVD Decrypter and an appropriate PSL file. If you must use AnyDVD, make sure you are running the bery latest version, and accept that it is always behind the protection on the latest DVDs.

  5. I am using AnyDVD to get over the region coding on the disk versus my drive. I don't think Shrink can do that easily without some brute force hacking(?) which I also think DVDDecrypter could do.

The problem isn't the ripping. It's the fact that if I point autoGK to the .ifo file for the main title on the DVD itself and do the conversion, the resultant file is out of sync. I am guessing that it gets confused with some of the menus at the beginning? But if I use Shrink to reauthor the DVD and only copy across the main title to the new DVD image, and then apply autoGK to that, the avi file is fine.

  6. Hi-

The problem isn't the ripping. It's the fact that if I point autoGK to the .ifo file for the main title on the DVD itself and do the conversion, the resultant file is out of sync.

The problem most likely is at the decrypting stage, especially if this is a relatively new DVD of a relatively new film, and has newer protection schemes. RipIt4Me can remove the unreferenced cells which cause the audio to go out of synch when converted to AVI. The region coding will be removed at the same time, but then all decrypters do that.

I suspect possible the out of sync is due to some of the menu video getting into the video stream but can't be sure.

    Not even close.

  7. Well whatever causes it, it was fixed by using Shrink to reauthor the DVD to the HD. It's not something I do often (just getting some DVD's ready for a trip) so I don't plan to dwell on it
