Hi All,
Am in the middle of backing up my DVD collection and after around 50 sucessful rips have come across a very VERY strange problem.
Depeche Mode - One Night In Paris.
Plays fine and smooth, yet when I use DVDShrink or DVDDecrypter to rip full disc to my PC ready to convert and archive, the result is a very squashed as if 2.35:1 picture but easily displays correctly when the player (VLC or KMPlayer) is forced in apsect ratio mode to 16:9 (1.78:1). TMPGEnc say the resulting VOB is 720 x 576 which is normal.
BUT... the problem is that the resulting picture shows a blocky or jagged quality on edges of items in the frame which are smooth and non existant in playback from the original DVD.
I have no idea what is going on and would appreciate some help if anyone can understand what I am trying to explain.
It seems the DVD which plays fine from the disc, shows blocky edges when ripped completely and played from hard drive.
As another interesting thing, when original or ripped VOBs play in WMP it displays as 4:3 letterboxed in full screen mode - therefore black bars on either left and right sides. this is supposed to be an anamorphic DVD.
Anyone got any clues please?
Thanks in advance

Apparently the VOBs were encoded as 4:3 but the original IFOs have it play as 16:9. That's unusual but not unheard of. The original DVD plays as 16:9 since most (but not all) players take the DAR from the IFOs but the VOBs alone play as 4:3 with the wrong aspect ratio. I don't use DVD Shrink, but apparently when reauthoring it takes the DAR from the VOBs rather than from the original IFOs, as it should. That's easy enough to fix. Open the reauthored DVD in PGCEdit, right-click on the video, hit Domain Streams Attributes, and in the new Streams Attributes screen change 4:3 to 16:9 and Automatic Letterbox. OK and Save.
I don't inderstand your blocky problem. Maybe you could upload a small sample somewhere for us to have a look. Or maybe the problem will correct itself after you reset the DAR. -
OH WOW manono, that is very interesting - I didnt know any of that and a great piece of detective work there by you!
I managed to encode the DVD into MKV using HandBrake and lots of tests to get the best picture.
I have got rid of the blockiness alot and have settled upon an MKV that is suitable to watch although still not as it should be.
Resting the DAR may well help but for now I am going to leave well alone.
However... I am going to save the information you kindly posted above as it is valuable and will probably help me out again in the future.
Thanks again for taking the time to help and write a very good lesson for me.
