I am running VirtualDub 1.9.5. I have installed the FLV Input Pluggin and followed all these instructions
quote "To install it, unzip FLVInputDriver.vdplugin to your VirtualDub\plugins folder. Make sure ffdshow-tryouts is installed, open "VFW configuration" (not "Video decoder configuration" which is for DirectShow decoding) from its Start menu group, go to the Decoder tab, Codecs section, and make sure FLV1 and VP6F are set to libavcodec.
To convert FLV to AVI without any editing or filtering, load a FLV in VirtualDub, make sure "Direct Stream Copy" is selected in both the Video and Audio menus, and choose "Save as AVI" from the File menu." endquote
When I open an flv file with VirtualDub, I get the following error message "File c:\video\test.flv does not have a video stream"
The flv file plays perfectly well in my flv player. I am not sure what else to try.
thanks Mark

If you just need to convert it, you might try Any Video Converter Free Version. It works on quite a few formats and will convert to quite few. If you need to edit, then VD may be needed. I haven't tried to open a FLV with VD, but even with the codec installed, the FLV may be a different type than what VD understands.
If I do need to edit in VD with a odd format, I've used Any Video Converter, converted to HuffyUV, then opened that in VD and edited, then saved out in a new format. That reduces re-encoding quality losses.
You can also frameserve most formats to VD, but that's a bit more complicated.
Or another member might have some tips for FLV use with VD.
And welcome to our forums. -
Thank you for your help and good wishes. I have been reading earlier posts and I guess that I can edit the flv with Avidemux and join them with FLVJoin (Andys FLV Joiner). I read that you don't have to worry about installing codec when using Avidemux.
I would have liked to get VD to work but I read that other people have had issues in trying to get the flv plugin to work. -
Make sure that
FLV1
THEORA
VP3
VP5
VP6
VP6F
are all set to Libavcodec in ffdshow.
Virtualdub will not handle nellymoser audio. -
Use the QuickTime VirtualDub plugin, not the FLV input driver. That sometimes works better.

virtualdub does not open flv streams with avc and aac. Use the directshow plugin for that. you need to select it specifically from the dropdown box when loading the flv.

Thank you for all your help. It seems to be working now. Maybe it was when I set Theora to Libavcodec. I am just glad that I am able to open the flv files in VD.
I am very new to video editing and have a lot to learn. is there an easy way to adjust the sound levels in an flv file. Can VD do that for me or should I post this question in another thread?
thanks Mark -
Most of my flv files will play but there are a few where I still get the "File c:\video\test.flv does not have a video stream" error message.
I tried using the "direct show input driver option" but that only shows.mp4 files in the dropdown files list. It will play the only mp4 file that I have so the plugin appears to be working OK but it won't play the difficult flv files. Am I doing something wrong. Is there anything else that I can try to get the few unplayanle flv files to play? The unplayable files will play fine in my flvplayer.
thanks for your help. I am making slow progress.

Do you have a directshow flv splitter installed? ffdshow installed?
Use mediainfo on the problematic files for more information
You have to select the file first (highlight it while it says "all types" not "directshow driver"), then select the directshow driver from the the dropdown menu in that order
Another way to import it is through avisynth and .avs script
DirectShowSource("video.flv")
When you use directshow driver, or avs scripts, you cannot stream copy (ie. you have to re-encode) -
Quicktime.
Consider renaming file from FLV to MP4Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

I have ffdshow installed but not directshow flv splitter. I can select one of the flv files that won't play and then select Direct Show Input Driver. I then get the following error message
Unable to set filename on media detector:hr=80040200
I also tried renaming the file to .mp4 and got the same error message
I installed then mediainfo and it says about Burn Baby Burn Hudson Ford which is one of the flv files which won't play

The difference is the one that works is in an .mp4 container
You need a directshow flv splitter than can be used as a source filter for h.264/aac in flv container
I'm not sure if the one linked here works when the red hotlink is for " flv splitter "; but the one on this page does for sure:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli2/files/DirectShow%20Filters/
You can register the .ax with radlight filter manager
That should work, but if not , you can open it with avisynth. Just open a text file in notepad in the same directory as the video, and write the following, change the filename to match:
DirectShowSource("file.flv")
Then save it and rename the extension from .txt to .avs. Now you can open that .avs directly in vdub -
I notice that the flv files that play are all H.263 like this one. Itis the AAC that are giving me the trouble....

yes install it. Also check AAC in the audio configuration
When you are using the directshow input driver, you need the directshow filter chain to work. This means you need all the directshow splitters, decoders etc... to work. If there is a "link missing in the chain" , it's not going to work
If you render the problematic files in graphstudio, does it render? if not, your directshow chain isn't setup properly for that file, and you won't be able to open it up in vdub with that method -
If you are missing components, they won't render in directshow
virtualdub uses the VFW (video for windows) system, not directshow. It's only when you force it to use the directshow plugin that it uses directshow (or though an avs script). The videos that work natively may be opening through VFW
If you're getting tired of this , I would just get it over with and use avisynth. It's arguably the best and most versatile tool and can do so many things - If I were you I would start learning the basics now. -
I did get one to work and it had 2 elements
It had the file and them Main Concept MPEG Splitter.
Maybe I should try flv splitter and then call it quits...and get avisynth -
I ran flvsplitter and miracle of miracles it now plays Burn Baby Burn......
I ran graphstudio and it rendered burn baby burn properly now.
Thank you for helping me through my first baby footsteps in the video world...
What I would like to be able to do is the edit the sound on these files...is there a way to do that as the sounds levels are all over the place..some ridiculously high
Mark -
Just use ConvertXtoDVD... Or use avisynth's FFMpegSource to load your video.

This method also requires the appropriate splitter and codecs to be installed, so if using the DirectShow input driver works, so will this, and vice versa.
