For a few years now I have been using DVDShrink and DVDFab to produce ISO images of just the movie and then burn the ISO to a DVD for playback in our DVD players.

I am going through a complete retooling of my Home Theater and PC set ups and would like to also have the option to play back the same decrypted video from an external HD on something like a WD TV box or HTPC.

The goal would be to have a myriad of movies on an external HD that I can play back at home or in the car on my new CarPC system.

What's the best way to do this? I would like a single movie file, no menus, nothing fancy, just the video!!

    Thanks in advance.

You could use dvd shrink to rip the main movie to a single vob file.
Or use MakeMKV to rip to a single mkv file.
    No reconversion.

But a htpc and I guess also WD TV supports dvd iso files directly also.

And if the flick is already ripped, you can use Vob2MPG, no re-encoding involved..

Thank you for the info. Looks like for WDTV .mkv or .vob is ok.

What play will play ISO files? My media center/Windows Media play will not play them.

Is it best to rip to a single VOB and then go to a mpeg4 format?
