  1. I just got a new portable media player, and sadly there's no matroska support, so I'm required to convert all my hi-def content to mp4 files.

Is there a quick way to do this without the need to reencode? After all they're both containers so this should not be hard.

  3. What's the reason for not working for a certain selection?

BTW what i had in mind was either using SUPER (dont know if it supports direct stream copy) or extract with mkvextract and then mux with mp4box or YAMP or something else.

But i need to konw in which cases these steps wont work?

  4. As you say, MKV is just a container format, it could have video and audio encoded in pretty much any format available.

Gotsent and Xenonmkv expect MKV files to at least have H.264 video, the audio doesn't matter as much, since that will likely be converted to AAC.

MKVs with any other video format than H.264 will probably have to be re-encoded.

  5. In case i want to retain the audio as well which in most cases happens to be ac3, what do i do? It seems that xenonmkv converted it to aac.

latest super build has indeed a remux - demux feature. But I have no success so far with it, so I don't recomended it.
    Maybe I'm missing something.

mkvextract / mp4box works most of the times.
Avidemux also helped me a couple of times: Direct stream copy / change container.
