Hi all,
I recently bought an MSI 865PE Neo2-P motherboard.
When installing the RAM, one of the 184 conductors became detached from the chip and when I powered it up that slot shorted. Filled the remaining slots with RAM in every conceivable combination, one by one=no boot, so I figured the board was stuffed.
I was thinking about it again tonight and decided to have a look at the underside of the board to see if the slot could be replaced and found six pins that look to be holding the RAM slot in, question is, can it really be that easy to replace the slot ?
Is there anything I need to be ultra careful with ? I do not have an old M/B to experiment with, I thought it maybe wise to ask the question before proceeding to buy a new slot .... see detailed photo below.
Any advise would be very much appreciated.
Cheers from downunder.

It is tough since every connector on the slot is soldered to the motherboard. So you are talking 184 soldered connections as well as the 6 that hold the slot in place.
Much more likely is that the short damaged the electronics since removing the short in that slot would be the same as replacing it as far as the other slots go.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but every Mobo where there has a been a memory slot damaged like yours has been toasted. Common causes I've seen wrong memory mad to fit anyway or memory not installed properly. I'm guessing there is some physical damage such as a burned spot on the slot.
If it is new memory I'd go back to the vendor and say your memory killed my Mobo...... Etc. Make me whole.
Good luck -
Hi TBoneit,
When I saw the six pins under the slot I thought perhaps there was no solder involved, on second sight, I can see all the solder points as well, impossible to repair. Your assessment is spot on, I should have known it wasn't going to be that easy.
Thanks for taking time out to reply.
Cheers. -
