I've given a couple away and I still have one at home which I will probably junk out. Is it just showing a partial page then hanging? Immediately after the memory and the CPU, it should show the hard drives and the optical drives. If it's stalls on the drive display part, it may not recognize one of the drives. If so, unplug all drives except the boot drive and try it again.

That sounds like a hardware problem with one of the drives or your boot drive may be messed up.

If you had a Linux or Windows PE boot disc, you could set the BIOS to boot from your optical drive and unplug all other drives including the boot drive and try it. That would tell you if the motherboard is working.

  3. I've got one in the spare room as well. Have you tried replacing the BIOS battery and resetting the BIOS? Also, try disconnecting the floppy drive and the cd/dvd drive - I have seen similar symptoms caused by a dead drive. It might also be worth trying a replacement power supply, I guess that's just as likely to go on an older machine as on a newer one. Good Luck.

Do you get any error beeps? I've found problems with faulty memory can cause this. Remove the memory and see if it does the same.

    thank you for all replys,
what i have done is replaced the old (good) one with one i bought (faster)
and i get bios ver and proc speed then it just sets there.
I put old proc back in and everything works fine.so,i think(in my little mind)
    that the proc is dead.

  6. Or the motherboard doesn't support it. Did you check the motherboard makers site to see if the processor you bought is supported or supported after a Bios upgrade?

    the motherboard(ga-71x) supports 500 to 1000 mghz.
i went from a 650 to 950 and got the hang time.
as for a bios upgrade i havent tried that.

maybe it needs more power? can you up the vcore volts in bios? does the bios have a manual and auto setting for the cpu? might have an early overclock engine that is set wrong?

EDIT: i just rememberd. i have an old socket a computer with an amd 950 chip also. hers died and i thought it was the PS but it ended up being the chip. so who knows.? could be dead. but that chip and setup is so old you could prolly get a whole new computre with those settings off ebay for 100 or less

EDIT: 2.. i jsut rememberd this too.. on my chip there was a set of dip switches taht needed to be set for the multiplier and voltage not bios settings. i bet thats the issue.

    this should help

You need to set the multi to 9.5 and voltage to 1.75 for the 950 to work. it is currently set to 6.5 1.7/1.75 which means the voltge settings are likely ok just change the Multi

P.S. if i remember corrently those slot A chips were very overclockable. i think i was able to get 1.4 maybe 1.35 outa mine. but hey whats an extra 400mhz?

Those appear to be Socket A CPUs, at least by the part number. I don't know if both socket types have the same CPU core, though.

Are you trying to change the multiplier and voltage from the BIOS? if you are, I think you misunderstood what Heywould3 wrote. He meant you need to physically change the multiplier and voltage setting on the motherboard by changing the dipswitch (or jumpers) on the motherboard.

Edit....Just found out that the Gigabyte GA-71X autodetect CPU voltage so there are no jumpers.

its strange that your board says it supports 500 -1000 yet you need bios update to allow fo a 900mhz chip? as webster says your boad is auto detecting.. but that doenst mean that there isnt some sort of jumper on the board to allow it to do it.. if you dont have your manual then go to the website and download it and look under cpu settings.
