Does your laptop have an S-Video out connection? That would be one way...

  3. If your laptop has VGA or DVI out and your TV has VGA or DVI/HDMI in you can use one of those. In the absence of those or s-video out you will need a scan converter. Keep in mind that s-video or composite video on a TV will not be very clear.

Confirm make and model of laptop.

There are also usb to tv adaptors available for laptops with no vga/s-video/dvi ports

Avoid cheap nasty scan converters for vga to tv as sold in ebay

My laptop is an Hp dv5-1235, it has both an HDMI port and External Monitor port. My TV has the regular 3 colored [Yellow, Red and White] ins and outs. What setup or device will give me a clear screen from laptop to tv please?

  6. Nothing will give a clear picture with the Yellow composite port on your TV. If your TV only has composite inputs you will have to use a VGA to composite scan converter like this:

    http://www.amazon.com/AVermedia-Key-Micro-Scan-Converter/dp/B00006B7F7/

It will be ok for watching youtube videos or streaming video from NetFlix. The Desktop will be pretty much unusable though. It will be hard to read. edDV posted an example a while ago:

From everything I have read here and the links, it tells me I am better of simply purchasing movies and not concentrate on watching movies on TV from a pc?

  8. Standard definition (or lower) movies can look ok with a scan converter. Composite output from a computer or scan converter can be about as good as composite output from a DVD player.

1: HDMI to Composite or S-Video Converter ... all the bells and price

2: AVerKey100pro,(also require stereo head jack to rca cable for audio)

Not sure if this is an option for you but, you can always stream(wireless)from the lappy to a media center like device...The PS3 or xBox360 work nicely...
