  1. Hope there are some zune users who can help me out.

Both my wife's Archos and my son's sansa view died and I am looking to replace with zune's.

I have been encoding all of our dvds to mp4 (h.264 / aac) using the same Handbrake PSP template. It is 480x272, 1.5 mbps, 160 kbps aac audio. I have the h.264 level set to 30 (level 3)

Does anyone know if this will work for the zune? Yes, I could re-rip these but it would be a pain in the a$$ and then I would have 2 versions of a movie on my hard drive. It seems that Ipods handle h.264 better than Zune's but they both want radios in their new players.

    THX, JNT.

  2. here is a page with a decent overview of the zune video specs. if the zune software doesn't like your video it will re-encode it during syncing with the zune by itself.

  3. Yes, I have seen the specs, but there are not very specific. I defiantly DO NOT want to have Zune trans code the video again if I can help it.

    But thanks for the reply.

    Zune resolution is 320x240.

As far as I know the only video it will not transcode is wmv 320x240. From what I can tell it accepts mp4 video but it will transcode it. Now if its mp4 at 320x240 it may only wrap it in wmv for compliance.

Please note I use a 30gb model. That is an old model. The newest ones are 80gb and 120gb plus the smaller 4 and 8 pocket models.

  5. yoda - the second gen zune is a lot more lenient about the videos it will accept before it automatically re-encodes. check out the list in the link i posted before.

  6. PSP profile uses CABAC, not compatible with zune

Most ipod profiles use I4x4, not compatible with zune

  7. I went to Zunescene and asked people about this subject. It turns out that my custom profile for my PSP as well as the IPOD template works with the Zune 80/120 without trans coding at the time of sync.

Thanks again to everyone who replied.

Now, do I but now or wait to see what the new ZuneHD really looks like. (At least for the wife, or maybe give the PSP to my son!)
