I go to University and live on residence. In order to connect to the internet we have to connect to a network, which means that everybody can access each others computers, firewalls permitting, etc. For some reason though, my computer will not find all the computers on the network. I know this because all my roomates can find everybodys computers, while mine maybe only finds like half of them. As far as I know I have all the same settings under Network as they do. Any reasons why mine may not be able to find them all?

Yep, it's the way your node is set
Change to HYBRID or MIXED mode. Not Broadcast, not Peer
Changing The Node Type
There’s no GUI applet to change Node Type. You’ll have to use the Registry Editor,
and change value
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\NetBT\Parameters\DHCP Node Type]
or
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\NetBT\Parameters\Node Type]
or add
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\NetBT\Parameters\Node Type]
Value Node Type
1 Broadcast.
2 Peer-Peer.
4 Mixed.
8 Hybrid.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

I apologize, lordsmurf, but could you explain that a little more. I'm not really good with computers in that sense lol. Thanks.
-
Goto START / Run / and type "regedit"...that will open the Registry Editor. Once you are in there, check the paths listed above by lordsmurf and verify the value of the key (if it exists).

Alright so I went into the registry editor, checked the path but could not find it, got all the way down to parameters, but once in that folder could not find DHCP node type or Node type. So I'm assuming that now I have to add it? How do I do that? Thanks.

Actually, I googled it and think I may have figured it out. Let you know if it works!

Copy and paste this into notepad and then change the extension to .reg
double click and say yes
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\NetBT\Parameters]
"DhcpNodeType"=dword:00000008 -
BTW, it also matters how long you have your computer up and running on the network. Do your friends leave their computers on all the time and you don't?
-
I know I leave mine running all the time, I think most people do as well. Like i'll look on my computer and see maybe like 25 other peoples computers. Then I'll go over to any one of my 4 roomates computers and they'll see like 50 computers on the network. So I dont know whats different between mine and their computers. We all have laptops running Vista. Obviously not all of the computers on the network are Vista, some are still XP. Actually the ones that are running vista, almost always need a password to get on, while the ones running XP dont. My computer will find both Vistas and XP computers, but just not all the ones that I know I should be able to see. Sadly its the ones that have all the good movies and such on their computers that I cant find lol
-
And I know for a fact that none of my roomates had to change anything in their registries. In fact they never had to do anything to find all the computers.
-
Sorry, I was looking at yor computer specs listed. It shows XP not Vista
From memory or lack there of, what do you have checked macked under the networks settings? Also are you on the same network as your roomates? When I say network, I mean name (NetBIOS) not IP. Agin just from memory...I don't have Vista -

Open a "Command Prompt" window or go to START / Run and type "cmd". Once the window is open, type "ping" followed by the name or IP for the computer you are trying to test.
ie: c:\ping google.com
C:\ping google.com

Alright so I pinged a few different people, those whos computer names I remember. The first one I pinged was one that I am always able to see in the network, and I got a very similar response to the one above. Then I tried two that I can never see, the first one again had a similiar response to the one above, while the other one could not be found, so he was probably just not on the network at the time. So basically the ping test was a success I suppose, now what is the next step?
-
answer
Since you pinged it by NetBIOS (its name) it is now in your arp cache, and it should be viewable via the network nieghborhood. If you can't see it, just do a search like you would for files, but instead for computers -
Well that was a minor incovenience stiltman, but appreciated nonetheless, however it still did not show up in the network and I wasn't abe to find it searching for it, tho I may have not done that correctly

net use X: \\computername or IP
or
