I believe todays DVD's are build up out of two layers so this can't happen anymore. -

If they are DVD format, do they play ok in a standalone player?
You could try a program like DVDFAB Decrypter
https://www.videohelp.com/tools/DVDFab_Decrypter#history
or
Ripit4me which is no longer updated

Sometimes they will read discs that don't show up in the windows explorer. If it works you will have to copy them to hdd.
Another option is to try a program like ISOPuzzle

Store bought dvds could rot too.....They dont last forever, you know? Try them on another player.

DVD drives do go bad with time and use. If you've used the drive a lot for ripping and playing, it may be time to get a new drive. They don't last forever you know. I suppose your old discs MIGHT be going bad, but it's more likely an issue with the drive. You don't mention what your software player is, but I do want to warn you that I have experimented a little with Power DVD 6.5 for HD-DVD and it is a completely flakey piece of crap that often hangs for minutes at a time while playing back anything.

Or they could be scratched on the bottom. I've had customers compalin the drive doesn't work, They bring in the disks and they are scratched to hell. And or they have sticky fidngerprints on them that looks like dried jelly. The botoms need to be clean and polished looking.
Note that Writing on top od CDRoms with a Ball point pen will damage them. Try it with a scrap disc. Press the pen down and Write hello for example. Turn the disk over and see the mirror image dented into the reflective layer.
Another problem labels. I've seen People put thos elittle preprinted return labels on the disc. Off Balance city.
And it is Known here that labels on DVDs can cause problems
