I tried using Xvid4PSP 5.05+ for the PSP it works well and if I encode separately for IPhone it also works well. I was unable to find a format which both will play well. Any suggestions? I use MP4 Ipod Touch it works well for the iPhone but the PSP does not play. Do I need to set the audio encoding which currently is AAC-LC ABR 128k and Video Encoding is set automatically at x264 HQ Ultra. Thanks

I am afraid I don't know the answer but it seems strange that neither is compatible with the other.

My understanding is that both use the same native resolution of 480x272 and both accept MP4 files with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio.

I can see one not being compatible with the other but I would expect one to be compatible with both but the fact that neither is compatible with the other is rather odd.

My example is this: The XboX 360 and the PS3 both support the MP4 format. However the PS3 has better MP4 support than the XboX 360. So it is possible to make a MP4 that plays on the PS3 but not the XboX 360. However if you make a MP4 that works on the XboX 360 then it will ALWAYS also play on the PS3 since again the PS3 supports everything that the XboX 360 does and then some (at least when it comes to MP4 support).

So I would expect a similar situation with the PSP and iTouch/iPhone since both share the same resolution and both support MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio. In short one of the profiles should be compatible with both devices.

Yet you say that the PSP encoded file only plays on the PSP and the iTouch/iPhone encoded file only plays on the iTouch/iPhone.

    That's very weird !!!

It may be I am using a slightly different codec in the audio portion. I see several different settings in XVid4PSP like the video encoding portion there are many combinations besides the different variations of X264 and AVC levels being unrestricted of do I need to specify the AVC levels 0 to 5.1. The combinations are too many. I am sure some do have the PSP and iphone so I was only wondering if someone had done so. Thanks so much for replying.

I think I figured it out (knock on wood).

    Open up XVID4PSP v. 5.035

Load the "MP4 iPhone / Touch" profile (or format as the program calls it)

Now load your video. Once the video is loaded click on AUDIO (across the top) and under that pick EDITING OPTIONS. The only thing you should really need to adjust is the VOLUME settings. Make sure both Amplifing is set to 100% and Accurate is set to 100% and then click OK.

Now on the front screen click the "E" next to VIDEO ENCODING. You need to adjust some of the parameters here but not all ... just some.

Click on the MISC tab. Change it so that it looks like this:

Please note that the only change you are really making here is the setting for REFERENCE FRAMES. You are changing it to "2" instead of the default of "6"

Now click OK and you are ready to encode. Make no other changes (although sometimes you may have to check the resolution settings under VIDEO).

This should create a video that will work on both the Sony PSP and Apple iPhone/iTouch.

I've created a sample MP4 using this method. Please try to download it and give it a try on both devices.

Here is the link ---> http://www.mediafire.com/file/0xczlxcc2mt/sample4pspandiphone.mp4

Please note that the file is called sample4pspandiphone.mp4 and the file is only 6.84MB in file size. This clip is about 1 minute 7 seconds long.

    Good Luck !!!

PSP cabac-only spec is obsolete (outdated)...

for who is interested in encoding for both psp and iphone this works:

    cabac=0 / ref=1 / deblock=1:0:0 / analyse=0x1:0x111 / me=hex / subme=6 / psy_rd=1.0:0.0 / mixed_ref=0 / me_range=16 / chroma_me=1 / trellis=0 / 8x8dct=0 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / chroma_qp_offset=-2 / threads=8 / nr=0 / decimate=1 / mbaff=0 / bframes=0 / keyint=250 / keyint_min=25 / scenecut=40 / rc=2pass / bitrate=703 / ratetol=1.0 / qcomp=0.60 / qpmin=10 / qpmax=51 / qpstep=4 / cplxblur=20.0 / qblur=0.5 / ip_ratio=1.40 / aq=1:1.00

in megui on encoder settings field select x264: Device-iPhone profile...click config...select RC and ME tab...change VBV buffer size to zero...change VBV Maximum Bitrate to zero...select Main tab...change AVC level 3 to level 2...select New and name it Device-iPhone&PSP.

to work on PSP it must be 480x272 (i tried 640x368 and it did not work)...if you find other working resolutions please post it...for better quality you can modify the number of reference frames in RC and ME tab (i tried 3 + mixed reference frames on/off and it worked)...

    best regards

Looks like you already got an answer, but a point perhaps of interest

    PSP
    PS3
    and Iphone/IPOD compatibility

    Video H.264/AVC using FFmpeg
480x272 - Cause the PSP will not allow anything greater unless cabac is used.
16:9 or 4:3 depending upon the original format.
    30 FPS
768 kbps - Max allow by IPHONE
CABAC off - Cause Iphone doesn't support it.
AVC 2.1 - Has to be lower then 3 otherwise IPHONE does not like it, but greater then 2 otherwise PS3 doesn't like it.

    Audio AAC LC
    48000
    2 Channels
    128 kbps

This will support IPHONE/IPOD/PSP/PS3/XBOX etc.. etc..
