I am looking for some good antivirus software or freeware that is good at preventing these horrible popups. I have ThreatFire that is my current antiviral software, but these popups keep getting through. I also have spybot which is good at getting rid of malware/spyware, but what is good at preventing these stupid popups?

Firefox browser + Addblock Plus add-on

Well, that depends. What popups are you seeing, and when do they appear?
If you run full/thorough system scans with both ThreatFire and Spybot, do they find anything? If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
If you are using IE6 or IE7, the third party add-on "IE7Pro" has the capability to prevent, filter, white list/black list, and much more.
http://www.ie7pro.com/
It's completely free and adds a flash blocker, crash recovery, and much more.
If your problem is being caused by spyware, you're problem is more complicated and can possibly be eliminated by using Superantispyware and Malwarebytes. I recommend the free versions of both and they are available for download here

and here.

Good advice from deckard8; Firefox with AdBlock Plus; it's a much safer browser than IE. If you use Firefox, also employ the "NoScript" add-on.
You can cross-transfer bookmarks, history, and other information between IE and Firefox.
I hope this helps.THREADKILLER !

I also use a hosts file.

All of my browsers do it. Can't do much about popunders. Things that show up when you close your browser.

1.Don't visit malicious websites(porn,bittorrent,etc).
2.In IE6 or 7 set the popup filter to High or use Firefox.
3.Use SuperAntiSpyware to check your OS for malware, the pro version will prevent a malicious website from taking over your browser.
Here's a good test: http://www.popuptest.com/ -
Popups happen on all your major websites, that's how they make their money, with popup ads. Turning off scripting will get rid of most popups but the websites might not work correctly. You'd be crazy to visit porn sites without turning off all scripting and cookies.1.Don't visit malicious websites(porn, bittorrent, etc).

I have tried many many peces of protection software, here is my 2 cents worth.
For the home user the paid for software does not seem better than the free.
I recently , stupidly, got the copy-book malaware. Nothing spotted it on install.
Only Malawarebytes got rid of it but I had to download the software and updates on another computer then using a usb stick install the stuff on the infected computer as it had been stopped from installing anything on line ! even updates.
I disconnected the infected PC from the Internet first.
After 5 scans and re-boots it went.
So having said all that I use:-
Spybot
Winpatrol
Avira anti virus
Set IE to only allow pop-ups on holding the crtl key is another thing I do.
Also regular use of lavasoft and ca anti spy.
I did try to set IE to ask me everytime is wanted to store a cookie but it gets boring. -
I use Firefox and it's been so long ago that I received a popup (many months) I just thought the whole popup thing was something that didn't happen anymore. Maybe I'm just lucky, but Firefox seems to stop all the popups without me even thinking about it.

The one important thing which some people still not do, is create a backup (especially having a computer connected to the internet). What is so damn hard about spending a short time (5-10mins?) creating a system backup which will save your arse sooner or later and give you flexibility.
As for the topic in question, i use firefox and adblock+, which since using them i have not seen a single pop up/under. Also using the browser with sandboxie can help if the website tries to install (more like force) items on your machine. -
horrible popups-- sound like malware is already present on your machine. would these be virus/trojan/security type popups? Any new icons by the clock or on the desktop?preventing these horrible popups
good advice in general but.Don't visit malicious websites(porn, bittorrent, etc).
porn is a big money maker. Any porn site that hands out malware is most likely a rogue site set up just for that purpose. Plenty of scam torrent sites to, otherwise malware would come via a download off of a network that you chose to install to your machine.
