I am using AVS Video converter to convert movies from divx format to MPEG to play on a portable device. Currently a 700mb divx movie expands to about 7GB after conversion.

The settings i am using are:

frame size- 640 x 320 (to match my player)
    frame rate- 29,97fps
    bitrate- 9000

    16 bit stereo
    48000hz

Can any of these settings be reduced to reduce the file size?

    thanks.

Quite simply, your MPEG2 bitrate is to high. How long is the movie? If 2 hours, go with a bitrate of 5200 for a DVD-5.

  4. file size = bitrate * running time

so lower bitrate = smaller file

At that resolution try a bitrate of around 2500 and an audio bitrate of 192. That should get you a file close to your original size (actually just over 800MB). If you don't like the quality, push up the bitrate and live with a bigger file size.
