i have a canon high def camcorder that uses tape ( hv 30) i use the camera primarily to record my children. Mainly my sons football games at night outside along with baseball basketball and track meets. i want to be able to take the excellent footage i have taken and be able to transfer it to another medium (and i assume dvd discs) so i can share it with others as well as having a permanent back up a back up in HIGH DEFINITION ALONG WITH BEING IN A MEDIUM THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE MY CAMERA TO REPLAY this is a subject i would think would be a no brainer but i began to think i am the only one in the country with this question. i have a i mac 7.1 bought new in dec 2007 if that makes any difference.. i would think that there would be a piece of hardware that would be able to convert the image from the camera via firewire or usb and record it on either blue ray or hd dvd. ANY AND ALL RECOMMENDATIONS WOULD BE HELPFUL THANK YOU VERY MUCH- LARRY

You and everyone else. We are waiting for better software. The first generation is out for PC and Mac and the results are mixed.

I doubt there is a Blu-Ray solution for a Mac with 7.1. You would need to set the cam for DV out over Firewire and edit as DV then encode a standard def DVD. But you were yelling that you don't want that option so you are stuck.

If you upgraded to Tiger or Leopard you could get FCP and all but I sense you don't want to spend the bucks.

iMovie '08 is awful IMO but it sort of works. It imports HDV to 960x540 for edit, then iDVD encodes out to a simple Blu-Ray structure. You need to buy a Blu-Ray writer and your viewers will need to buy a Blu-Ray player.

The PC side offers more low end options and many programs retain full HDV resolution to the Blu-Ray disc. Some allow 20min recordings to standard DVDR that can be played in a computer, PS3 or XBox360. Search the archives for more on that.

Higher end solutions are discussed here widely.

    Bwahhaaaahahaaahhaaa! :P

iDVD won't do anything Blu Ray. Encore, Toast or running DoStudio on the mac are your only options.

Oops. I forgot that. I stopped at single field iMovie'08 960x540/29.97 as a non-start and went back to Vegas.

    No mention of Blu-Ray.

In fairness, I'm told you can export from iMovie to Apple digital intermediate format (AIF)* so that Final Cut Pro can finish in 1920x1080i or 1440x1080i but I think that is way above the OP's budget or place on the learning curve.

    * I don't understand how but folks on a FCP site said this was possible from iMovie'08 without resolution reduction. I think they mean you somehow capture to AIF.

Thank you for your reply... i do have leopard on the Mac along with the i movie and i dvd..i have read that Apple has been dragging its feet with respect to integrating blue ray burners to their line... i have a PC and unfortunately have to keep it because the browser that i download specs and drawings from is not Mac friendly..money is not so much the problem because my children are my only hobby therefore i would be more than glad to purchase whatever i need to get high definition home movies on a medium that will be stable and fairly wide spread.. i do not have time to do a lot or research but am willing to invest the time to educate myself.. the reason i thought i was the only one interested in converting my high definition tapes to another medium is because i was finding it hard to match my questions with google searches.. so bottom line is that i am flexible... i am being forced to stay at least for time with a PC so i am purchasing a media oriented high end PC ( recommendation questions later in a different forum) Thank you again for your help i would be interested in hearing from edDV again given the response to his comments... you are obviously extremely knowledgeable and are motivated to share your expertise with others... thank you again larry

You have run into the same road block as the rest of us. I archive and play my HDV And HDTV captured material to and from hard disk. Short clips are stored to a standard data DVDR. I can borrow a Blu_Ray writer when necessary and author within Vegas-DVD Architect but I don't yet own a PS3 or Blu-Ray player.

  7. I have been using NeroVision (version 8 ) in order to join the clips and get a decent HD mp4 file. It takes long, (about ten times the length of the clip), but that is the price for editing HD video. I have also created DVD's from the same compilations, in order to share the videos with friends. I get good DVD quality but, as expected, it is not as good as mp4.
I keep the original video files in an external harddisk, waiting for better editing software to come.
