OMG can this stuff get your mind boggled!!! In reading a newbie post, I think I have a good idea on how to accomplish my task but would LOVE some expert input, please.
1)I want to transfer my family videos (8mm camcorder tapes) onto DVD (rewritable for now).
    2) AFTER that, I want to edit the movies with Windows Movie Maker (I have) or a better movie editor in the future, at my leisure (i.e. as I can find time here and there to do this)
    3) Then I will permanently burn the re-writable DVD's to final DVD-R or +R. (I have both a DVD-ROM and DVD burner in my desktop).

I don't need perfection. I want easy and fairly inexpensive as I am a full time student (therefore I have no money to speak of). I do plan on investing in a multiple format DVD recorder for about $90 at Best Buy. I can't afford the higher priced ones with a firewire port. Will this task be as simple as hooking up my camcorder A/V output to the DVD recorder; which will record my DVD+RW's, which I can edit at my convenience? Do I have this right? (Yes, the DVD recorder I have my eye on works on practically all existing formats at this time.

I just want to confirm I'm on the right track, don't want to buy yet ANOTHER DVD player to no avail.

Do you have a camcorder with IEEE-1394 out? List the camcorders you can use.

If all you have is a video 8 camcorder to work with then yes you connect the video and audio RCA cables to the DVD recorder inputs.

I actually have two camcorders and two types of media I'll be working with. The old one with the 8mm tapes is an older, Sony CCD-TRV15. I also have a newer Hitachi DVDCam (model DZ-MV730A) which has posed some problems as it does not have a firewire connection (or ANY way of connecting it to a computer, for that matter)....but it records onto DVD-R and DVD-RAM formats, both of which the new DVD recorder/player supports.

    Thanks for your help!

OK so neither has firewire capability so for 8mm use the composite video and audio cable to the DVD recorder.

For the Hitachi DVDcam, you can do the same thing or access the files from the DVD on a computer.
