  1. I have a 7.5 -hour video that is
Mpeg2 at DVD bit rate from TV card and I want to use TMPGEnc 4 XPress to convert the files to: 1150kbps CBR, 352x288
My question is, should I convert to mpeg1 or mpeg2? I mean, for the above given parameters, will mpeg1 give a clearer picture or mpeg2 give a clearer picture? The reason I ask is that in the past, I converted to mpeg2, authored and burned to DVD in DVD format and I got some reports that the disk was not playable in some computers with DVD drive. Thinking about this, maybe the disk wouldn't play because the user didn't have the mpeg2 codec (like Stinky's codec) installed. I want to have the disk playable in any computer ( the final user may not have the knowledge to install mpeg2 codec). So then, would mpeg1 be better?

  2. Please see the glossary on the left.
I think that using MPEG1 will result in less quality.
I dont believe that you can author a dvd that will be playable on ALL players.
Author the DVD then burn using IMGBURM and Verbatum media for best results.

For these specs, use MPEG1. IIFC, these are VCD specs.

  4. you can always include one of the free video player like vlc or mpc on the dvdr with the video.

7.5 hours of any type video on one dvdr is going to look really bad. you might get away with 2 discs using dvd spec mpeg-2 but i wouldn't want to have to watch it. anything under 200kbps is junk. mpeg-1 vcd spec would be a little better. a really high compression codec like mpeg-4 might be the way to go if it's only going to be played on computers.

  5. Still no clear answer to which is clearer, mpeg1 or mpeg2 (for same 1150 bit rate, 352x288 picture size).
Comments so far, "mpeg-1 vcd spec would be a little better" and
"I think that using MPEG1 will result in less quality."
As I said before, I already made the DVD with the above specs using mpeg2 and I am definitely satisfied with the picture quality. I just want to know if mpeg1, or mpeg2, will produce a clearer
picture. Anybody else have some ideas?

  6. since it's your video, do the conversion and judge for yourself. we can't, we don't have your source material.

For the same specs (resolution, bitrate etc.) mpeg1 and mpeg2 will be identical in quality.

  9. Thank you for the answer, "For the same specs (resolution, bitrate etc.) mpeg1 and mpeg2 will be identical in quality." In that case, mpeg1 wins hands down due to the mpeg2 codec issue (as mentioned above in my first post).

Yes, mpeg1 is more compatible for PC's.

The Mpeg2 codec is not preloaded, many machines don't have it, it's not as widely recognized as mpeg1 which is on every machine. Is that hard to get?
