  1. Everytime I shut down my computer it has a "Device IO Notification" pop-up, where I either have to wait or click "END NOW". How do I stop this or get rid of it? I have no idea what it means.

start > run > eventvwr.msc, double-click the error and use the third button on the right to copy the information to the clipboard then paste it here

If this is related to hd, use chkdsk, info > http://www.deltatranslator.com/chkdsk.htm
If usb related, remove all non-essential usb devices from system, reboot, and see if it re-appears.

Also consider ms has a bad habit of releasing updates which cause problems.
Uninstall all ms updates installed within the last 2 months, and see if problem returns after system reboot.
(This is also for those affected with sudden usb storage devices not being recognized, or in error)

What antivirus product are you using , could be caused by malware
Try avgfree or avast home, and include the free edition of superantispyware

  3. This is the error I get

The attempt to power off WINXP failed

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I'm using Symantec (no problem before).

Do this in event viewer (pointer indicates button to use)

Then in post, just right click, and select paste and the info will show.

Note : If you click on that active link a new window will appear, please read the information as it will list the file associated with the issue which might indicate where the fault exists.

You should also take note of any other system generated errors in the event viewer, and files associated with these errors.

Second, download the free belarc advisor, and run it to generate a report.
Copy only the information regarding xp updates that have been installed, and paste this information as well.

If you have the os cd, you might want to run

    sfc /scannow

will wait and see the extent of report in next post.

Have you recently installed any type of product of HP?
I have installed a all-in-one HP printer (HP Photosmart C6200 series) and I have the same problem.

I've looked everywhere to find the cause of the error, but I didn't find it. I think it is a HP problem...

I think it's an issue related to HP Digital Imaging Monitor. I have recently installed an update for the printer, and from that very moment, the problem began.

I think I've found a solution, I'm going to run it directly after I type this... :P
Press the START-key + R on your keyboard. A tiny window appears, type in MSCONFIG (small letters) and click the OK-button.
A window appears, I think you have to click BOOT (not BOOT.INI), but I can't assure you, because I have a translated version of windows (in Dutch).
Look for each program starting with HP, and read the next part.

In my case there were 2 programs starting with HP: "HP Digital Imaging Monitor" and "HPWuSchd2".
If this problem is caused by an update of the drivers for your printer, you have to de-select HPWuSchd2, because it's in the updates-folder.
If this problem is caused by the software itself, you have to deselect the Digital Imaging Monitor.

I am not sure which one causes the issue, but I'm going to deselect them both...

I am going to reboot my computer in a minute, then I'll tell you if this has worked. (I am not sure!!)

There's a second solution: go to the HP-website, and look for a driver-update!

Yes, it worked. Just follow the easy steps described in the last answer.

I'm sorry for the double-posting, but I had to :P

skwirrel. I think you have to go to a tab called "Startup" and deselect "HP Digital Imaging Monitor" and "HPWuSchd2". There is another tab called "Services" but I am not sure what that is.
