Ok I've wasted all morning on this. My Hauppauge HD PVR 1212 was working perfectly yesterday. I dubbed a full 3 hour tv program yesterday morning no problem. Now I am getting the device is not connected message.
I think I had it happen once or twice before. Didn't think anything of it. It resumed working previously.
I was using the latest update to the Arcsoft Total Media software.
Here is what I have done:
1 - reinstalled software - then updated to latest version - still getting message
2 - unplugged power - no change
3 - tried different usb port - no change
4 - full pc shutdown and powerup - no change
That is basically what you're supposed to do to resolve a software issue right?
I have tried sagetv trial software. It looks ok. However It doesn't let me go through the my recording menu on my dvr to select a program and play it. It doesn't seem to like the on screen graphics from my motorola dvr with comcast. It does seem to do live tv ok. It records into a ts file which is ok I guess - I liked the m2ts option better in the arcsoft software.
I just tried beyond tv but I couldn't get it to select the fiber optic in on the hdpvr itself. It seemed like it only wants the digital input on my creative xfi sound card which I don't want to use.
What other options do I have? Should I reinstall all of the arcsoft software again and start over?
I did try to do some internet research on this. It seems like lockups are fairly common on the hd pvr 1212.
Suggestions?
I think mine is less than 90 days old. I'd have to check my receipt to know for sure... I'd hate to rma it......
edit - checked my email - got it from tigerdirect and it shipped 6-14 so its just over two months old.
Also its rev d2 if that helps any (I guess that means its the second release of the hd pvr?)

Do you get Windows' musical "device connect" tone when you plug the device into the USB port?
You probably know that the device has to powered up before you run the ArcSoft capture module. -
@jagabo - yes to the second one. I don't have speakers on all the time to know for sure. I have gotten it before when I do have the speakers on (its routed through my amp so I don't have my amp on all the time when I'm using my pc.
edit - It's working!?!?!? What the hell???
I didn't do anything different than I have before. I unplugged it and plugged it back in the usb port a few times. I turned on the amp and I did hear the chime or whatever you want to call it when a usb device is plugged in.
For the life of me I'm not sure why it's working now. I did change my speaker output to speakers instead of spdif out. I can't imagine that would have anything to do with this would it????
Unfortunately I was rather aggressive and deleted two shows I had recorded on the pvr thinking it would take me longer to fix the hauppauge. But I still have other shows to dub. I also know for a fact the two I deleted will eventually repeat.

Oh and jagabo now that its back I'll try to the hddvd dub for you.....Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
The problem you are experiencing commonly happens in computers with hubbed usb ports where the printer, or too many resource heavy devices are also connected. I have seen many people complaining/blaming USB HDD manufactures for issues revolving around USB HDDs randomly disconnecting and their blame was misplaced. I had a slower computer and had it happen myself, I later added a USB expansion card and never had the issue again.

I'm not sure how that is part of the problem. I only have the hauppauge hd pvr connected. The other item is a external harddrive but it is off 90% of the time. I mainly have it connected to transfer the files I record so I can use the external harddrive on my wdtv media player.
Also I have a 650 watt power supply. Shouldn't that be enough?
I'm not doubting what you're saying I'm just not sure how its applicable to my situation since I really don't have anything on my usb ports on this computer......
And by the way it was working again and did complete a dub successfully.....Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
I've had that precise issue. In my case, it was old (and flaky) ATI graphics drivers. The HD-PVR stopped working right after I got a blue-screen with an "ATI2dvag" error. [EDIT] Before, that, from time to time, it would stuff up, but a reboot would solve it. After the blue screen, rebooting wouldn't fix it.
I tried to install new drivers: no dice. Uninstalled/reinstalled, still no good. Mind you, everything else worked okay, so far as I could tell, just *NOT* the Hauppage. Finally I used the "ATI Software Uninstall Utility" in Add/Remove programs. Ever noticed that? It's there for a reason. :P Then I could get a good install of the latest drivers. I was just about to the point of thinking the HD-PVR was defective.
I wish I could guarantee the above will fix your problem absolutely. But I've learned there are innumerable ways for computers to get screwed up, goodness knows.
Still, you could give it a shot. Good luck.
BTW, hope you have some good system restore points available.
[EDIT] Have your original install disc for your graphics card ready. You need it to install the VGA driver. Then close, reboot and install the new drivers and CCC utility.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
@fritzi93 - it's back working for now.
FYI I do have the ati all in wonder hd pci-e card 512mb model - that is my display card that I have hooked up via a hdmi-dvi cable (the newer ati model one from last year not the first gen wonder card).
Could that be having intermitten issues with the hauppauge card? I haven't updated the ati drivers in ages. I haven't been playing many pc games lately so I haven't really had a need or desire to do so.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
yoda, the power supply is never the issue when it comes to hubbed usb ports, it's the usb is limited as to it's own capacity. In the case of the USB HDDs people often could unplug them and the come back online for a few moments, or even hours, in other cases they wouldn't come back online until after they rebooted, in either case their troubleshooting simply temporarily reallocated the resources. The intent of my message was to put possible causes on the table in case the problem comes back, or others have issues with usb devices.

@fritzi - thanks. I haven't gotten that message yet that I know of. I'll leave my settings as they are now. If I do see that I'll try to remember this thread.
