Hey folks, I'm looking for a DivX DVD player that fulfills the following criteria:

    1. Ability to properly handle very high video bitrates (over 2,000kbps) = Critical
    2. Ability to properly handle single video files over 2GB or 3GB = Critical
    3. Ability to handle all types of text-based subtitles (Sub, Srt, etc.) = Critical
    4. Ability to properly handle XviD files encoded with QPel (QuarterPixel) = not critical, but preferable
    5. A player that features an internal DTS decoder = not critical, but preferable
    6. Ability to handle long filenames and/or ID3 tags for MP3s = not critical, but preferable
    7. Ability to properly handle WMA/WMV files = not critical, but preferable

As you can see, I have specifically bolded the things I consider absolutely critical and those are deal breakers for me, as the vast majority of my encodes are in high bitrate with single files larger than 2GB.

Of course, the ability of the player to properly handle all versions of DivX/XviD should be a given criteria.

Things like HDMI, SACD, DVD-Audio, x264, mkv, DivX Ultra, Bitmap Subs, USB, etc. are irrelevant for me and do not constitute a priority at this time. That being said, if a player has one of those features, I would consider that a bonus, nothing more.

    I would appreciate any help...

    Thanks
    kress

I just picked up a Philips 5990 but it won't meet all your criteria although I've barely tested it yet.

    A few words of caution:

I own the Philips dvp-642 and some people claimed high bitrates and so did I up to 3800 but that was progressive. With interlaced video the audio skips a bit with video bitrates above 2200. This difference wasn't apparent at first with what seemed like conflicting claims about bitrate.

Early on some said that it played video files larger than 2gb but my own tests revealed that it could read the file but when it reached the 2gb boundary the player stopped so it never played to the end. Obviously some had not played the files right to the end. That's when I started cutting my longer vids to under 2 gb's.

On the other hand some said it wouldn't play embedded subtitles in divx (srt) but it does.

I'm just saying to be careful with any claims people make. Sometimes mistakes are made in good faith but they can be misleading if you are counting on a feature as being critical to your needs. In my case once I had divx with the 642 everything else was secondary but now with the better 5990 I'm expecting more. I've already read some things which sound promising but won't really fully believe them until I test them myself or they are confirmed by multiple users.
