    Government unveils world's fastest computer

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/06/09/fastest.computer.ap/index.html

Scientists unveiled the world's fastest supercomputer Monday, a $100 million machine that for the first time has performed 1,000 trillion calculations per second in a sustained exercise.

The computer, named Roadrunner, is twice as fast as IBM's Blue Gene system at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which itself is three times faster than any of the world's other supercomputers, according to IBM.

To put the computer's speed in perspective, if every one of the 6 billion people on Earth used a hand-held computer and worked 24 hours a day, it would take them 46 years to do what the Roadrunner computer can do in a single day.

Some elements of the Roadrunner can be traced to popular video games, said David Turek, vice president of IBM's supercomputing programs. In some ways, he said, it's "a very souped-up Sony PlayStation 3."

"We took the basic chip design [of a PlayStation] and advanced its capability," said Turek.

What he is trying to say is multi-cell processors in layman terms.

If this were to ever happen (a supercomputer taking over the world) it would probably be more along the lines of the movie Colossus: The Forbin Project or perhaps even WARGAMES and yes both of these movies preceded The Terminator ... in fact Colossus was released in 1970 some 14 years prior to the James Cameron film!

How in the world do they program the trillion calculations it needs to do each second?

Fortunately Cameron clearly ignored that turkey. The movie was even worse than the book. Which was a difficult achievement. Of course both Wargame and Colossus had the same idiot plot device. No On Off switch. In Terminator it wouldn't have helped to have a switch as Skynet achieved complete control without any warning.

Which is why there are men in the loop and lots of fail safes. True all such films need a McGuffin of some sort but it helps if it doesn't strain credulity before the drinks strain your bladder.

Neither did the computer on Star Trek TOS, but Kirk defeated it anyway, the bad thing about that episode was no hot alien babes. I thought Colossus was a pretty good story, for its time. Same with Wargames. I haven't seen the sequel yet, but its direct to video so that speaks volumes usually. Skynet won't work if it has a MS operating system, someone will hack it to death, or it will be frustrated by parts of it needing to be rebooted and destroy humanity starting with....say, thats it!!!! Skynet destroys humanity because its mad at M$ for the crappy OS!!!!

It's really fast, but the DRM copied from the PS3 slows it down to Commodore-64 speed.

Well Virginia Madsen was the best chick in a Frankenstein movie anyway. The Duet wasn't as good as I remembered it. I didn't remember that Culture Club was on the soundtrack. Fortunately Do You Really Want to Hurt Me is not on it. I am not a violent person but that one had me saying "Now that you mention it the thought has a certain appeal".

Unfortunately there is no DVD and movie's rights seem to be in Hollywood Hell.

Nevertheless there is remake scheduled for 2010. This is truly weird.
