    Hi,

I am having trouble playing a movie that is in AVI format using DivX Player 6.82, which is supposed to be able to play the most up-to-date movies according to its advertisement.

I get no video and the audio is squeaky, but I also get two error messages that says 1) the audio requires an additional codec and 2) that there was a failure to create display device, that playback may not be supported by my hardware (I have never seen this error message before).

According to GSspot, I have the audio and video codecs installed. (I attached the screen capture of the scan results) I am really stumped.

Could someone please give me some suggestions as to how I can fix this?

    Thank you
    Chuck.

Frankly, I wouldn't use the Divx player for anything. It has always been a second rate, buggy add-on to the Divx package, and should have been dumped form the download archive long ago.

The audio is ogg, so you may be missing the appropriate ogg filter for the Divx player. It should be able to play the video, assuming the fourCC hasn't been altered prior to you taking possession.

That said, save yourself a lot of heartache and use The KM Player or VLC instead.

Although the older versions of the player were buggy (the original player was spyware), the newest player uses hardly any resources at all. I only use this player to play .divx files though. MPC for most other files.

Thanks a lot guns1inger! Installing KM PLayer worked. I also remove all video codecs on my pc and installed the k-lite codec pack, and now other programs such as Windows Media Player and Real Player can play the movie too

However, now I am trying to grab portions of the full movie using Windows Movie Maker, but the program cannot read the video still.

Does anyone have any idea why WMM cannot display the video when other programs can? I even checked the ffdshow video decoder configuration, and WMM is listed as one of the programs that uses the ffdshow decoder so it should be able to display the video... no?

Are there any other free or low cost software available on the net for editting avi.?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  5. You might have to ensure vorbis and divx are enabled in the ffdshow configuration (vorbis is not enabled by default)

If you want to do simple edits only (like cutting) for .avi files, virtualdub and avidemux are free and work well

If you want to do complex edits, transitions, you will need a payware solution like vegas, premiere (and many others)

Hm, I don't see vorbis listed in the ffdshow video codec configuration. Am I looking in the wrong place?

  7. Look in the ffdshow audio decoder configuration, not video.

While you are at it, check if DivX is enabled in the ffdshow video configuration.

I'm not sure if wmm uses the vfw interface like vdub, so that might have to be enabled as well (the ffdshow vfw interface configuration)

Turns out the problem was with the WMM settings under 'options'. Somehow the fddshow video filter was disabled in WMM. Not sure when or how it happened, but enabling fddshow video filter fixed the problem.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

I don't like divxplayer either, but it is still needed if you want to play a divx media file with subtitles (xsub) since there is no other software that supports xsub subtitle I'm aware of.

There is a plugin that comes with the bundle that allows you to play .divx files with media player classic. Matter of fact, the Revelations trailer will not play from the menu in divx player and crashes but plays fine in media player classic with the plugin.
