thank you in advance for the help.
    my story....
i transfered from mini dv to puter.
edited it with windows movie maker.
saved as avi file cause i read thats the best way to go.
used sothink dvd maker to convert and burn to a dvd+r, dvd's are sony. they worked on my puter and magnavox dvd player but when i gave it to someone it wouldnt work on 4 of his 5 players and the 5th one( apex) was skipping.
so i went and got dvd-r thinking that might do the trick well it didnt.
i used sothink for the converting and burning cause i found it on the net and it was free so i am open to ideas of other programs if the program is the problem.
i cant figure out what is the problem.... i am fairly new to the whole process but i thought i figured it out but it wont play on so dvd players.... is it something i did wrong? should i save it in wmm using something other then avi?

I never heard of that program you mentioned but often times the way you burn the disc can have a lot to do with how compatible it is with various DVD players.

I suggest getting to the point where you have a VIDEO_TS folder with your DVD files (IFO, BUP and VOB) then convert that to an ISO file with ImgBurn and then do the burning with ImgBurn.

Most media these days are either 8x or 16x but try burning at 4x or maybe 6x but definitely no faster.

    Should work (knock on wood).

Output a DV AVI file from Windows Movie Maker. Use FAVC to create the Video_TS folder, then burn with Imgburn using the Write Files/Folders to Disc option. Select the Video_TS folder and Imgburn will do the rest. Burn to quality media, not cheap junk.

I have personally never found Sony to be a consistent brand, and have only ever had mixed success with them. I only use Verbatim if I have a choice, and if that is not a available, the expensive TDK line. As you are in the US, I would avoid TDK, as they use a different manufacturer to what we get here (The US basically gets the same TDK that we get at the budget end of the range - i.e. crap).

I know others will disagree on Sony, and have had good success with them. This leads me to believe it is a drive/disc compatibility issue, and it is cheap to change discs than it is to change drives.

That said, I am not yet convinced you are burning the discs you have correctly. When you put the disc into a PC drive and open it with Windows Explorer, do you see a Video_TS folder ?

also yes when i open the disc it shows audio_ts and video_ts
so i am starting to think that it is the dvd's themself that are the problems

The absolute no-guess best blank DVD media you can buy are Taiyo Yuden.

These can be bought on-line from RIMA.COM

    The 100 pack of 8x DVD-R discs are only $25.99 + shipping.

Here is a direct link ---> CLICK HERE

The shipping charge for my address is $7.51 but that can vary depending on where you live. Still even at $7.51 that is a total of only $33.50 or roughly .34 cents each. That's a pretty darn low price for what is considered the best DVD media around.

However like guns1inger suggested let us make sure you at least burn correctly to the Sony discs before you toss 'em out the window.

Having said that buy Taiyo Yuden in the future and forget anything else.

I know this is digital so maybe that's why you aren't "getting it" but you aren't getting it.

You need to think of it in analog terms.

For whatever reasons the program you use to burn and the way it does the burning can affect the QUALITY of the burn. When the QUALITY of the burn is "bad" then the discs will play on some players and not others.

ImgBurn has proven itself to burn as correctly as anything.

So try a burn with ImgBurn to see how well that works. Although it very well could be the media i.e., the Sony discs.

From the FAVC page in VideoHelp's Tools section:

Do you know if you have both of those installed? If you don't have them installed, I went ahead and copied the links from the Tools page and re-added them to the quote above.

I think Microsoft is up to v3 of the .NET framework. Maybe you tried to install v2 when you already have v3 installed ... hence the error msg. Just a guess!

When it comes to encoding your DV AVI to MPEG-2 DVD format you can try HCenc. As I understand it the FAVC program is just a "front-end" of sorts to tools like HCenc. No reason why you can't use HCenc directly.

Version 1, 2 and 3 are separate and independent, so installing 2 on a machine with only 3 on it should not be a problem.

FAVC requires .net 2.0 It clearly says so. It won't work with other versions.

DVD Flick is free and worth a look, otherwise try the payware program ConvertXtoDVD
