  1. If I use the following file name:
    abc.avi
    abc.english.srt
    abc.spanish.srt
    abc.chinese.srt

I can only have one subtitle displayed. I can switch to other subtitle by press SUBTITLE on the remote on DVP642, but not DVP5982. Anyone has solution on multiple subtitles?

    Thanks

According to the manual (page 37), the unit supports multiple subtitles for regular files and via xsub for Divx 6. I personally only use a single subtitle (english), so I can't verify usage with multiple files.

  3. Okay, now I verified this: The subtitle cab be switched correctly If player plays from a Disc. Problem only exists in USB source.

  4. The problem with USB is the filenames. The 5982 only supports 8.3 character filenames over USB so longer filenames, or filenames with spaces, periods, etc. get munged. For example names like:

    The Movie Title.avi
    The Movie Title.chinese.srt
    The Movie Title.english.srt
    The Movie Title.spanish.srt

    after munging become:

    THEMOV~1.AVI
    THEMOV~1.SRT
    THEMOV~2.SRT
    THEMOV~3.SRT

So some of the SRT files aren't recognized as subs for the AVI.

Microsoft holds patents regarding long filenames on FAT file systems. Either Philips doesn't want to pay the licensing fees or Microsoft won't license them.

Use something like AVIAddXSubs to mux all the subtitle files into the AVI (note: this isn't burning them into the video itself), assuming it's at least DivX 5/6. You should be able to switch the subtitles, even if it's on a USB drive.

I note someone posted a 'long filename-capable' firmware on VH's information page for the 5982 yesterday (4/5/08 ):
    https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers?DVDname=DVP5982&Submit=Search&Search=Search&dvdpor...y=Name&hits=50

...but that's a try at your own risk-sort of thing, and it's probably better just to use the method I mentioned above, for now.

    Hi, Jagabo:

yes, you are right. Switching subtitle works after I shorten the file names in USB.

  7. 1. installed that firmware, supports long name, but now subtitle is blinking and position is higher than usual, so I am going to change back.
    2. Not all AVI can be converted to Divx.
    3. Some avi files were converted to DivX, plays fine in computer, but won't display subtitles when playing on DVD player. it is strange, so I have to use either idx/sub or srt to work.
