I have a canopus advc300 that I'm quite happy with but I don't really use it enough to warrant the high price that I paid for it. I've just spotted a JVC miniDV/Svhs combo unit in a used hifi store (not sure of the model number) that can output standard vhs tapes through its dv firewire socket. The price is pretty reasonable and if I bought it, I could sell my canopus and be quids in.
What I want to know is if the capturing results will be as good as the canopus?

Are you certain that it outputs S-VHS through the IEEE-1394 port?
The reviews I read never made that clear. It will dub DV to S-VHS.

I've been told by somebody who used to own one that it does.

I have the JVC unit. You can capture VHS/S-VHS through the firewire connection. Don't know how the quality compares to the Canopus, though.

Only problem I have is that the miniDV captures sometime have corrupt frames. Same tape captured through the camera has no corrupt frames.

I have the JVC HR-DVS3U. It is a MiniDV and S-VHS combo VCR with a FireWire output. The single port DOES allow you to copy MiniDV or S-VHS/VHS to a DVD Recorder or other item through FireWire which allows for lossless copies. I do not know if other models allow this.

    You're a smart cookie. 8)

I do the same sort of thing myself, every now and then.
