  1. I am using both WMV.vdplugin and MPEG2.vdplugin pluggins for virtualdub.

Both would allow me to edit mpeg and wmv. I since then formated and using the exact same vdub I can no longer edit wmv (mpeg works).

After it goes threw the whole "Constructing asf index block" there is just this big "missing codec" in the middle of frame. (edit: just tried installing wmp11, still have same issue)

man, both wmv and mov are such massive pains, but wmv is not usually that bad.

    Try this.

First, install wmp6cdcs from Microsoft. This package contains the following codecs:

    Windows Media Video 9 VCM
    Windows Media Audio
    Windows Media Screen v7
    Windows Media 9 Voice Directshow
    Windows Media Video 8
    MS MPEG v1, v3
    ISO MPEG 4 v1, v1.1

Make sure you have ffdshow installed and in Virtualdub, select video, compression and choose the ffdshow video codec. Under Configure, for WMV1/ 7 and WMV2/8 choose WMV9.

  3. tnx for the reply.

Windows Media Video 9 VCM fixed a lot of them... still cant edit some, but I suppose directshowsource can be used for those...

I don't have any problems with 7,8 or 9 but I am having problems with the Windows Media Audio 9.1 Professional audio in WMV-HD.

I'm pretty sure I was able to decode these files in Virtualdub before I replaced my MB and CPU but can't seem to get them to decode now without Avisynth.

They play fine in Media Player Classic.

Found a workaround for the Windows Media Audio 9.1 Professional audio in WMV-HD.

Use dBpoweramp Music Converter (it's free) to convert the 5.1 Windows Media Audio file to 5.1 wave file (open WMV in dBpoweramp Music Converter and select Wave > 6 '5.1 Suround' DVD).

Open WMV in Virtualdub 1.8.0 and select Audio > Audio from other file (select 5.1 wave that you created)> Full Processing Mode > Compression > AC3-ACM

Actually, the current version of dbPowerAmp Music Converter is shareware. I think the last free version was somewhere around Release 10 or so.

From my understanding, you have to buy a license to use certain parts of it but the converter itself is free.

The only time I get a nag screen is if I try to use the Fraunhofer 5.1 MP3 codec and it says component needs reference
powerpack and MP3 license: trial 29 days left
all media guide: 29 days access remaining

From my understanding, the free version will not convert to Lame MP3 after the trial period is up.
