  1. I have a non-copyrighted DVD that is not encrypted, i.e. the VOB files are already available.

I need to ultimately convert it to wmv so I used AutoGK to convert to an AVI. When I do this, the video is fine, but the audio gradually gets more and more out of sync. The VOB's are fine; I've watched the segments I need but still get the issue. I've followed a couple tutorials and searched on this but haven't found anything helpful. When I ran AutoGK I didn't change any settings.

Is there some setting I need to be aware of? Is there another program I can use to convert this?

I own TmpgEnc Express but it apparently has no method of doing this conversion. Is there any software free or otherwise that can do this job reliably?

    Thanks.

Are you opening the vob in autogk? if so try instead select the ifo file from the video_Ts folder.

Tmpgenc xpress should be able to import the dvd directly and convert to wmv, at least when I tried some year ago.

Extract the M2V from the VOBs and frameserve it into
    WMNicEnc or VirtualDub via Avisynth.

IMPORTANT: better NOT use VBR audio, nor .WMA,
    nor the ASF container

  4. Thanks, I have been using the IFO rather than the VOB. The first segment of the conversion seems fine but once it hits around 5 mins in, the desync is quite noticeable, and the further it goes, the worse it becomes.

I'm a casual user of video conversion tools, so I'm not sure about the frameserving bit mentioned here.

I'm also running this software on a powerful PC, core2 duo extreme with 2GB of ram, so it doesn't seem it could be a hardware issue.

Are there any other fairly simple tools I could use?

Oh, and if it makes a difference, I'm using AutoKG v 2.45.

    Thanks.

Is there a reason why you're not just encoding it directly with the Windows Media Encoder? There are some free front ends to it that make it fairly easy to use.

If you are using VBR MP3 audio as Midzuki points out, this can cause sync problems. You save almost no space at all using VBR over CBR and run the risk of having sync issues with VBR.

  6. I finally used DVD2AVI which was also giving me synch issues, but I saved the sound in wav format and then used TMPGEnc's audio offset to correct the issue.

    Thanks.
