Honestly i've never really done any kind of a side by side comparison.

I usually use shrink when small amounts of compression are required & dvd rebuilder pro for larger amounts of compression.

I usually turn friends onto this program for the same reason as you, one program, one button push and it rips, transcodes & burns to dvdr in one shot.

I have watched many movies that were backed up using DVDFab Platinum and they looked fine to me, & i watch about 98% of them on a 54" and i notice bad things pretty fast, more than other's that watch the same thing with me.

Also when my friends or myself backs up a movie, we usually do "Movie Only" so there is not much compression & we like to be able to just throw in the disc and watch the movie without farting around waiting for menus, trailers, ect.

Not to mention all the extra options it has makes it definately worth the money, besides regular updates for newer copy protections.

I have DVDFAB and CloneDVD2+ANYDVD. DVDFAB does not work with DVD +RW discs. They cannot be read after finalization. DVD+/- R works well. CloneDVD2 + ANYDVD work with DVD+RW discs. So, for me CloneDVD2 + AnyDVD are better. I have two burners:Pioneer DVR-115 & Plextor 760A, both excellent burners.

Honestly if you really want to spend the money then spend $30 and get dvdrebuilder pro. It wont rip the disc so you'll have to use dvdfabhddecrypter (free version) to rip to the hard disc first. Other than that it is will do everything you want (encoding using the freeware HCenc encoder, rebuilding, and disc burning) with terrific quality.

There is dvdfabhddecrypter which just rips the video. It's free.

Then there is dvdfab which rips the video, transcodes to fit dvd5, and burns to disc (it's not free).

About two days ago and more recently just now. Working just fine. You can get it from the link that Jim44 provided or try this direct download link ( I just copied the link from the dvdfab free page).

  14. Sometimes we get absurdly cheap when it comes to this hobby. I struggled for awhile with the panoply of "freebies" out there and all it did was give me a headache. The three key functions you need this software to do RIGHT every time is decrypt the disc, and then fit it to a single-layer blank, preferably letting you delete extraneous bonus crap while leaving the menu structure intact, and making a backup that plays on a wide range of hardware.

Software that does this easily and reliably costs money, end of story. The days of the free ride with this stuff ended some time ago- the "opposition" is making fast and furious changes which the "freebie" authors can no longer keep up with. The "pay" software is updated frequently to keep pace, usually before you even know you need it.

Pickings are getting slim in Windows (and I pity anyone trying to do backups on a Mac). A year ago in desperation I tried the AnyDVD-CloneDVD2 trial software on a spare Windows box we had in our mostly-Mac office, and I've never looked back. The day it expired I bought the full versions. Cost was what I'd spend on two or three DVDs. Worth every penny. If you're even bothering to cruise these forums, you're smart enough to let the moths out of your wallet and buy some decent software. I can't believe how many of you have a PS3, a WII, a PSP, countless games, and an iPod but are *horrified* at the thought of buying backup software. Please.

If you want near-bulletproof backups with one-click software, buy AnyDVD/CloneDVD. Or if you prefer, buy DVDFabPlatinum. The point is BUY something that will work properly and be updated fer crissakes. The cult behind DVDrebuilder is beyond me: if you can make it work for you, I'm happy for you, but I take one look at the instructions for HCencoder and my eyes glaze over; I check all the reports of its creating unplayable backups, and my mouth drops open at its popularity. If you really do need a backup as perfect as the original, go on eBay or to Blockbuster and buy a second-hand original for $3.99. If you just want a backup for the kids, the car, or the laptop why fool around with complicated multiple free solutions with separate decrypting, shrinking and burning software? Life is too short.

Just my point of view, I know a lot of us like to play with this stuff for the hell of it, I totally "get" that and I'm not saying I'm right and you're wrong. I just never see one of these "how do I do backups" threads answered with the obvious "buy good one-click software and be done with it". I think a lot of people who ask about this would be better served using something like CloneDVD-AnyDVD or DVDFabPlatinum unless they truly get off on tinkering with the process.

I stand corrected, Only I am having a problem. I'm using I.E. v6.2900.2180.xpsp. Just did a 'Windows Update' and installed latest updates. the 2 green buttons show up briefly and than disappear, moving the mouse over the area where they should be does not reveal a hyperlink. this thing used to work for me before. btw I tried it on my other PC and it works fine. Weird. If it's a browser problem, is it possible to completly uninstall I.E and then re-install it?

No but you can try to repair it through Add/Remove Programs, another option is to upgrade to IE7.

    Yes!!!!!!!

I very much second that. Firefox is a much better browser than IE. Runs faster and you have less of a chance of getting adware/spyware. I've been using it solely for the last few years now.

    Read up on it here

Any of the following combinations are capable of producing excellent quality backups.

DVDFab Platinum (DVDFab Software Inc.) OR

DVDFab HD Decrypter (DVDFab Software Inc.) & CloneDVD2 (SlySoft Europe Ltd) OR

ANYDVD + CloneDVD2 (Both by SlySoft Europe Ltd)

What I would suggest is you download DVDFab Platinum, it comes with a fully functional 30 day trial.

Then download DVDFab HD Decrypter (free) and CloneDVD2 which comes with a fully functional 21 day trial period.

Read the guides, try both out on a few of the same disks, compare the results, see which interface you find most comfortable and then decide which to purchase

glockjs, I honestly suggest DVD Shrink paired with whatever is needed to read or rip the source disc (DVD Decrypter, DVD Fab Decrypter, AnyDVD ... whatever you want).

DVD Shrink v3.2 has a hacked version out there that uses ImgBurn to burn.

So you'd only need two programs. Does AnyDVD+DVD SHrink work? I'd bet so. There's almost the same as a 1-app solution.

DVD Rebuilder Pro $30.00 will provide the best video quality compared to any other one click programs. Just use the DVDFAB HD DECRYPTER to rip to hard drive. Make sure you're always using the latest version of DVDFAB HD DECRYPTER. I have noticed pixelation when watching a dvd disc that was converted w/DVD SHRINK. This occurs on my Sony 40W3000 LCD TV but if I watch a dvd disc that was converted via DVD REBUILDER PRO there is no pixelation. So for me DVD REBUILDER PRO all the way! Just my 2 cents.

    Old does NOT mean inferior.

DVD Rebuilder Pro re-encodes anyway, it does not shrink, therefore no comparison can be made between the two products.

DVD-RB Pro is overkill anyway. The base free version of DVD-RB works fine.

I've never had problems with Shrink.
