Hi everyone![]()
Would someone please tell me if quoting someone else's post increases the usage of bandwidth and therefore slows down the forum?
I saw this information at another forum. I don't know whether or not it is true and how significantly quoting someone slows down other people's access to a forum, since this is something people at that forum have beeing doing for years without any complaints. The issue only came up after there was a huge argument between the forum owner and some members over politics.![]()

yep...a miniscule amount of bw is needed to display any text on the screen whether it's a quote or not
however, it should not slow down the site...since the text's bw is so small -
Thanks zoobie.
So, it's more likely that the bandwidth "concern" arose from the politics, not truely from bandwidth consumption, since the quote was all text, no graphics.
No wonder why our forum has "no politics, no religion" policy. A very wise policy. -
You might be surprised at how much/little hard drive space the site uses. Take a look at this post by Baldrick: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic343495.html#1795008
But I see some forums where they quote the whole of the last post as part of their reply. Again and again in each following post. That always seemed strange, as the last post is there if you want to read it. Repeating the whole of a post seems a waste of bandwidth to me, IMO, and takes more time to scroll through to the posters comment. I try to trim a quoted post down to the part I want to comment on.
Text doesn't use much bandwidth, but photos or graphics do. We try to limit their size. Baldrick seems to have the right combination of settings for our site. -

I'm glad I stopped posting anything there several years ago. -
Most times, if you use a quote, it just links to the post the quote is from. That takes very little bandwidth, not much different than a shortcut on your desktop. But I still dislike scrolling through multiple copies of the original post in each following post.
