I recently borrowed a friend's high definition Sony camcorder HDR-HC3 to film a family event. Using a firewire cable, I then was able to capture the 60 minute tape to my hard drive (using something was on the HP computer when I bought - a program named Muvee Producer or something like that).

I now have a 13+GB avi file sitting on my hard drive that plays fine using an old freeware version of BSPlayer.

But, I'd like to convert that 60 minute, 13GB AVI file, to something that I can burn to a DVD-R for friends and relatives. I still have the tape from the camcorder, but I had to return the Sony unit so I have no (easy) way to re-capture the file on the tape (so hopefully I did that part right).

I'm not concerned about adding chapters or other things that will make the DVD fancier, etc. I just want the 60 minutes on a DVD. I'm told I may be downsizing (or downgrading?) the HD to DVD, but that doesn't concern me (I don't even own a high def tv - nor do any of the relatives to whom I'll be sending the DVD-Rs, if I can get those to work).

Any suggestions of programs to use (preferably freeware)? My computer came with the Sonic DVD modules so if I can use that, that would also be great.

    TIA.

first find out if you really have an HD file. if it's an avi it might be SD, normal cam miniDV. the cam you borrowed can record/transfer either HD or SD. try gspot and see what it says the file is.

then go the links on the left and look through the guides for converting to dvd mpeg.
