    hello

have a problem with my philips stand alone dvd player. Have had it for years not sure of the exact model but some divx movies play with a very narrow wide screen, leaving half the screen black above and below

lived with it for years but my eye sight is getting worse

anyway to make it fullscreen? tried messing about with the menu cant get anything to happen

    cheers

Bottom line - most movies are widescreen, and many are wider than even a widescreen (16:9) TV. You have a couple of choices then, as your eyes get older.

    1. Get a bigger TV. The best option, because you don't have to compromise the viewing of the film.

    2. Try setting your screen output to 4:3 P&S in your player. This might force an automatic fullscreen. This will crop the ends off the movie, and depending on the movie, may therefore remove important features. Many luddites will tell you that it is OK to do this because nobody puts important things in the outer edges of the frame. These luddites are morons, and wouldn't know a good film if it bit them on the arse.

    3. Failing this (and divx handling is not consistent, so some players will crop, others will not), you would have to manually crop the files and re-encode. This will reduce the quality because you will be re-encoding, and because you will end up with a much smaller image that will then be enlarged by your player. While it will then fill the screen, it will be soft, blurry and blocky, and do your eye sight no end of evil.

screen output is already set to 4:3 P&S, doesn't seem to make a difference still shows up in that narrow screen.

Most are watchable but some *cough* diamond *cough* are unbearable

Don't have the money to spend on a new tv so i guess ill just have to live with it

    thanks for the help
