Every single time I convert flv to avi the avi will have little squares or boxes in it. Is it normal when you convert flv to avi for them boxes to always be there and if so how can I remove them. When converting flv to avi I have noticed that the avi files can be quite large at times, is flv compression that much better than divx compression? The only way I have seen to stop the big size is using vdubmod and FLVExtract. To bad there isnt a program or script that will perform all the steps so all you have to do is pic the flv file and let it do the rest lol.

The squares are called macroblocks, and are usually caused by low bitrate of the original flv file.

You could try the deblocker filter from MSU: http://www.compression.ru/video/deblocking/smartdeblocking_en.html

FLV is meant to the the end product, so converting it to another format will always give some quality loss.

Tools needed to understand source file:

    GSpot
    https://www.videohelp.com/tools?toolsearch=gspot&Submit=Search ... rfeatures=

    MediaInfo
    https://www.videohelp.com/tools/MediaInfo

    Conversion software:

    ALLtoAVI
    https://www.videohelp.com/tools?toolsearch=alltoavi&Submit=Sea ... rfeatures=

You will need to play with the VIDEO BITRATE or QUANTIZER in ALLtoAVI to get the quality you want. This is where GSpot and MediaInfo come into play as you compare the source file specs against the destination .AVI file.

Last but not least you might need:

    AVI ReComp

    https://www.videohelp.com/tools/AVI_ReComp
The program allows you to recompress your AVI files. Uses only XviD codec to recompression process. AVI ReComp can be very useful for users who want to clear their AVIs out of GMC or Qpel functions to prepare the clips for standalone DVD players.
