is there some freeware software available that will play a vcd on a cd-rom computer drive? (not dvd-rom) the vcds are on cd-r media.

okay pretty much any dvd playing software will play vcd. but,
here is couple freeware vcd players:
I-VCDP:

by the way, vcd are on cd-r media not dvd-r media, unless of course you followed one of the guides here and burned it to dvd-r. But I'd say 99% of vcd are cd-r.
both freeware programs above play vcd pretty well. Though my favourite
is the I-VCDP program nice design and plays them very well.
and if you use the zoom control on the player you can put the playing at full screen.
