I'm putting together a new PC and I'm using a MSI K9A2GM mobo.
It uses ATI AMD system drivers ... all my other builds have used mobos with Nvidia Nforce systems.
The problem I'm having is ... there is only one IDE connector on the board and my DVD Burner is connected to it.
When I install the WINXP MCE2005 ... I can use the DVD Drive ... the BIOS sees it and nothing goes wrong ... yet.
After I finish installing Windows ... I use the MOBO system disk to install the drivers ... when I reboot ... that DVD Drive is gone.
I also use a USB DVD Drive and it stays ... so I can use it. I just got in the mail from NewEgg the Lite-On Blue Ray reader for 71 bucks and it works ... but it is connected to one of the SATA ports. I do have 4 Sata ports and one is still left to use.
I went into Device Manager and looked at the info related to the IDE section ... it is using ... amdide.sys.
I tried the roll back driver feature ... and my DVD Drive is back ... it is now using .... cdrom.sys ... instead.
So whats up with this. I have searched the NET and nobody is saying anything about this problem.
I seem to be the first person to have this problem. WINXP MCE2005 is currently installing again and it is using the DVD drive in question. But if I update with the AMD's updated drivers on the CD or from the website ... I will lose the drive again.
What was interesting ... as soon as I did the roll back driver thing ... the drive was back without rebooting.
Shall I just say ... ah heck with it ... and leave the ... cdrom.sys ... driver ... alone after doing the other Driver updates .... I will have to do a ... driver roll back ... but ... hey at least it is back to be used.
I looked around for a new update file and couldn't find any ... I did find one website and they wanted a 15 dollar PayPal payment. At Microsoft there is a different .... amdide.sys ... file for Vista ... but not sure if I will be able to extract it or what kind of crazy hoops I will have to jump through to ... to see if a different ... amdide.sys ... file will work ... in a WINXP system.
Question for you guys ... will there be any difference in noticeable performance ... if I just use the ... cdrom.sys ... file ... instead of the ... amdide.sys ... file![]()
Since ... this PC will go into the bedroom ... using it to watch DVDs ... well .... there are two DVD Players already up on the shelf connected to the Pioneer Receiver ... so I dont think I will be using it for watching DVD movies.
The Blue Ray / DVD Player does work ... but I really dont want to wear it out ... playing DVD disks. There is a USB 2.0 DVD Drive ... just sitting on the dresser table where the PC will go ... waiting to be connected to the PC when I put this PC in the bedroom.
Any thoughts about this ... AMD system file ... amdide.sys .... causing my DVD Drive to not be seen in windows![]()
