i have a sony g120a, flashed to a lite-on 165p6s msop firmware. i use dvdfab platinum for my backups. my ripping speeds will start out between 6-12 MB/s, depending on the disc, and drop to 1-2 MB/s sometimes even lower. the drive will make a "clicking" sound while reading. however when i burn my speeds and quality are fine. ive reset dma, uninstalled secondary ide, disconnected the cables and reconnected, checked master/slave jumpers, enabled/disabled smart burn, upgraded to mv96 and mv9n test firmwares, even went back to sony myr5 and myr6 firmwares, uninstalled dvdfab and reinstalled to earlier version, ran hdd cleaners, spyware/adware cleaners, registry cleaners, disk defragmenter, system restore... still no difference in ripping speeds. ive tried backing up original and backup dvds, both same results. ive went back to msop firmware because when my drive was working correctly i received better burns. nero cdspeed will create disk and give quality reports with no problems and i can watch dvds with vlc media player.

what is with the clicking sound and slow ripping speeds?

    thanks troy

My first guess would be a hardware issue. Drives typically don't make clicking noises, which could be a tracking related issue. It could also be an aging/failing laser which is causing read issues/errors. In any case, there isn't much else that you can do except replace the drive.

thanks for the suggestion. i have found my problem and fixed. i have gotten a new foxconn (80 wire ide) cable and i had corrupt installs of the vso burning engine that dvdfab uses. again thanks for your reply.

That's weird. Cable issues typicallyl result in data transfer problems, both reading and writing. Neither of the issues that you fixed would cause the drive to make clicking noises.

    Glad it's working for you.
