    What would be a good software firewall and antivirus for running on an old 600mhz celron with a whopping 256mb of ramm
    8)

    So obviously it has to run with minimum use of resources, as there is not much to begin with

    Thanks!

    maybe the old avg free v7.5 - it only protects against email viri, but runs lighter than v8 which also has online protection.

    I was going to recommend the full AVG Internet Security but they just went to version 8. No more support for Windows 98. Needs a 1.2GHz CPU as well.

    However the AVG Anti-Virus plus Firewall:
    Computer Hardware

    * Intel Pentium 300 MHz
    * 30 MB free hard drive space (for installation)
    * 256 MB RAM available

    Still won't go to Windows 98 anymore. Wants more memory than version 7 as well. The HD space is the same.

    You can download a free trial and see if it fits your needs.

    Of course if that ancient machine is still running on a pre-Windows 2000 OS then you would be better off trying Linxux. 600MHz is decrepit.
