  1. I have an old 17" CRT monitor that I want to use for capturing VHS tapes and wanted to know if anybody has any recommendations on S-Video to VGA converters and if the colour recreation is accurate. Would these devices (like the Viewsonic Nextvision Nx series) be a good idea or am I better off buying a small TV? What I am mainly concerned about is if the picture and colour recreation on the CRT monitor will be any good.

Just generally, you will need to adjust the color levels, contrast, brightness, hue, etc., on any monitor if you want to calibrate it or make it similar to any 'standard'. None of them will be preset properly. There's a whole lot more to it all, but I'll let others with more expertise give you better info.

I agree it would be extremely difficult to get a good calibration on a VGA monitor suitable for color correction..

  4. Well I am not talking about perfect broadcast quality correction, just minor enhancement. Would I be better off then just buying a decent 13" or 14" TV then (I was thinking about a flat Toshiba)? Thanks

Yes a TV will be a better reference.
