  1. Hello all,

After playing with chapters (entry-points to be exact) with
VCDEasy and Ulead DVD Movie Factory, I have learned
the following: (here I am talking about a VCD with entry-
points within a single long MPG file, NOT a multi-track VCD)

    - In PBC mode, VCDEasy enables you to jump to the next
or previous chapters by using the |> and <| buttons respectively,
as well as the numeric keys. This, combined with VCDEasy's
flexibility to add user-defined entry-points at regularly spaced
intervals, makes chaptering very useful. Chaptering is
seamless upon playback (e.g. if you skip to Chapter 3, the
VCD will play Chapter 3 and all subsequent chapters without
    pauses).

    - In PBC mode, Ulead DVD Movie Factory does NOT allow you
to skip forward or backward to chapters, making chapters less
than useful IMO, especially since Ulead goes back to the main
menu one a chapter has been played. The only way to access
a specific chapter is via the main menu. The only way to play through
all chapters seamlessly is to play the video in its entirety (e.g. start
with Chapter 1). Perhaps I am missing something in the config
but this is what I have found.

    So, my summary:

    VCDEasy:
Pros: - Chaptering with entry-points is seamless and very easy to
    set up.
    - Offers great flexibility in defining entry-points.
    - Enables you to skip across chapters without requiring
    navigation to a menu.
Cons: - Does not make menus (TSCV, another GUI for VCDImager,
does this, but seems to be complex to use - I've not
    tried it yet).

    Ulead DVD Movie Factory:
    Pros: - Makes nice menus
    - Very easy to use
Cons:- Chaptering with entry-points doesn't work as I'd expect as
    already described.
    - Interface to set entry-points is clunky IMO and not
nearly as flexible as offered by VCDEasy.
    - Menu options are limited.

    So, here is my conclusion:

    - VCDEasy is better for chapters in a VCD with long MPG files (or
a single long MPG file) like a Sopranos episode.
    - Ulead is better for VCDs that have multiple shorter MPG files
(like a multitrack collection of short home movies)

Both are great apps, but I thought it would be useful to articulate
my findings and views on the strengths and weaknesses of
    each.

Thanks, hope someone finds this useful.

  2. Furthermore - to add to your topic...

DVDMF is okay (crashes when it's done burning on my particular XP system) for the beginner, or someone who doesn't have the time or desire to go to the next level.

Last night I Finally (after a LOT of effort) created my first VCD with motion menus using TSCV. It has all the features of VCD easy and a heap of other features too many to list. It is NOT easy to learn...not even. TSCV looks to be a program geared more to the techno-video scene. I will however say this.. It rocks! Best program I have found to create VCD's so far.

    My freeware toolkit:
    VirtualDub
    TMPGEnc
    TSCV

    Outstanding work programmers!
