when i burn my copies i always burn at the maximum speed that i can because when i burned at slower speeds in the past it takes longer. my uncle told me once he never burns past 6x or maybe it was 8x even if the disc is 16x or 8x. is it just one's preference or does it matter when you burn faster or if you slow it down to burn?
can i get a little help with this please?

It depends on the drive - and the disc.
4X Taiyo Yuden media - I burn at 6X on Plextor PX712A (8X-12X drive), 8X on Plextor PX716UF or NEC 3520 (or Sony OptiARC)
8X Taiyo Yuden = same.
4X Verbatim = 4X on all drives except the Sony.
16X HP (CMC media code) = 6 to 8X, never 16X - even on the 18X Sony.
Why?
I want to be able to play the damn thing in 6 months.
Typically, I use the rated media speed up to 4X and 1/2 above that.;/ l ,[____], Its a Jeep thing,

Here's an article on that subject...
DVD Burning, Speed vs Quality
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=20949
The conclusions therein seem a bit unclear, except the brand/model of DVD writer may make a difference, as does the brand/kind of disc, of course. As that article discovers, slower is not always better, but most pros tend to favor slower burns.
Personally, I usually burn at about half the rated speed of the disc. I use 16x single layer DVDs, Taiyo Yuden (or Playo for unimportant work), and usually burn them at 8x. However I've burned a few at 16x and they work OK.
As for the 2.4x-6x Verbatim+R DL discs (unofficially rated at 8x, by some people), I burn them at 4x. The only coaster I've ever had with that brand was when trying to burn at 2.4x, although there could have been other causes. -
If you use good quality dvd media like TAIYO YUDEN & VERBATIM you could burn at 8x - 12x speed. As mentioned it also depends on the brand of dvd burner.

Yes Budz - I could burn at 8x - 12x - but 16X can produce a crappy burn. Of course, some programs restrain that (i.e. imgburn) and only burn at the best speed for that particular media code and drive combination. I stopped using DVDXCOPY because it couldn't restrain itself (nice video, crappy burns).
After years of burning, years of learning - it's only TY and Verbatim for me!!!;/ l ,[____], Its a Jeep thing,

I sent in a DVD-R master disc to a duplicator for a project. It was Verbatim, rated at 16x, that I burned at 8x. I got an automated email saying there were errors:
"Technical evaluation of the master you sent suggests that copies are likely to be unplayable in most systems. We recommend a new master be created at a slow burn rate on highest quality media and using industry standard software, and to consider resubmitting another disc burned at a lower speed"
So I burned to the same disc brand at 4x and mailed that out today. I'm hoping it works The 8x played fine in the few players I had checked them with. -
